Stanwood Middle School
Family Message - Saturday, January 21st, 2023
Good Morning Stanwood Middle School Families!
Empowering Our Spartans to Learn
One of the most important things Spartans need to learn to do is organize their thoughts and be able to write what they are thinking--whether that be explaining a math problem, writing up a lab report, answering questions completely, or writing an essay showing their critical thinking.
Writing is also one of the hardest challenges our Spartans face. As part of our work in the building this year, we have researched and adapted a standard way to make sure students are following the same writing in all classes.
You'll see the CERC (Claim, Evidence, Reason, Conclusion) model below. Students will see this used in every classroom as we move through the year. Take some time to ask about CERC and the Unstuck strategies that your student may be seeing in class!
Girl’s Basketball & Boys/Girls Wrestling Sign-Ups
Girls Basketball (7th & 8th grade) will begin on Tuesday, January 31st from 2:30-4pm at SMS. The combined Spartans United Girls and Boys Wrestling (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) will begin on February 6 from 2:30-4pm at Stanwood Middle School.
IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS:
Athletic Registration: An Athletic Registration Form must be completed either online or by hard copy prior to turning out for practice. This includes emergency contact information, insurance and the Athletic Code.
Sports Physical: All athletes must have a current sports physical (good for 2yrs) turned into the office BEFORE turning out.
ASB Card/Pay to Participate: Each participant must purchase an Associated Student Body card and Pay to Participate fee before the first contest. The ASB card is $20, Pay to Participate is $50 per sport ($100 maximum per year; Free/Reduced options for those who qualify).
Transportation: In the event that we cannot get a bus to out-of district competitions (due to bus driver shortage), we will have district vans. However, seating is limited, so the Stanwood/Camano School District is allowing families to arrange transportation to and from competitions when this occurs. These families will agree to provide their own transportation to and from away competitions and understand that the district assumes no liability/responsibility for the athletes during the transportation times. The waiver will need to be signed and returned to your athletic director prior to your first out-of-district event. *Hard copies of the waiver can be picked up in the office or from your athlete's coach Parent Transportation Waiver for Middle School Sports
Free Sports Clinic for 6th Grade Girls
On Monday, January 30th, SHS will host a free Sports Clinic to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day! 2:00-4:30pm
3-6th grade participants, who attend school (or live) in the Stanwood-Camano School District, are invited to join us for an afternoon of active fun! Everyone is welcome, no experience needed, and we will rotate through stations to introduce skills in a handful of our girls sports!

Homework Club
For the next six weeks on Mondays and Thursdays, Mrs. Thomas will have an hour dedicated after school to really help our Spartans be empowered to learn with volunteers from the SHS National Honor Society tutoring across all subjects. The club meets after school until 3:10--please make sure your Spartan has a ride home after getting some extra help.
Nominations open for Highly Capable Program
The nomination period is now open for Stanwood-Camano School District’s Highly Capable Program. The class is for exceptionally advanced learners in reading and math for students in grades K-12.
Read more about the Highly Capable Program HERE
Nomination packets are available from school building secretaries or can be downloaded HERE. The nominations are due by January 26.
Get school updates via text
The school district is adding text messaging capability to our school communication system, which currently uses phone calls and emails. The system will be configured to send text messages to cell phone numbers whose recipients have agreed to receive them.
Many of you already received a text from 67587 earlier this week requesting you to opt-in to receive important informational text messages from your child’s school. You simply need to Reply Y to confirm (messaging and data rates may apply).
Alternatively, you can text “Y” to 67587 to opt-in to receive texts. In the future, if a recipient’s cellphone number is changed or a new number added to our information system database, the new number will automatically be sent an opt-In message.
Have a great weekend!

Spartan Pride Awards
Each week we find time either during lunch or the morning announcements to honor the students who show of PRIDE. You'll get a letter home and the PRIDE slip from the teacher for prominent display on your refrigerator. We appreciate all of our Spartans and how they work hard across so many areas each day.

Meet The Spartan Staff
This week we are pleased to shine the spotlight on Alena Eldridge, one of our science teachers. This is Alena's first year teaching EVER--having earned her undergraduate degree in Geology and Master's Degree in Education. Ms. Eldridge splits her Spartan time between the middle and the high school everyday.
Ms. Eldridge is enjoying the energy her students bring to her classes everyday at Stanwood Middle School.
Outside of school Ms. Eldridge enjoys crocheting, sharing her creations with her classes in the back of her room. She's even looking into starting a crocheting club to help others learn this fun hobby.
