October Warrior News
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are already entering the month of October! We truly appreciate your support and partnership this year! We are excited for a great year of learning and celebrating all of the growth along the way!
***We need your help! Recently, we’ve seen an increase in absences, tardies, and early sign-outs, which is leading to learning loss and causing disruptions in our classrooms. To ensure that students are getting the most out of their learning, please help us by making sure your child is at school every day, on time, and stays for the entire school day. Teachers are actively teaching right up until the bell!***
We’ve also noticed an increase in last-minute dismissal changes, which can be disruptive as we need to call classrooms and interrupt instruction. We kindly ask that you plan ahead and communicate any changes to your child’s dismissal with the teacher in advance to limit these disruptions. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a focused and productive learning environment for all our students!
We have an exciting month ahead in October. We are looking forward to our fall pictures, Safety & Red Ribbon Week, a music performance and a book fair. There will be a different theme each day of Red Ribbon week. We encourage all students to participate in our efforts to eliminate bullying and ensure safety of all students. More information will be sent home to you as the dates near. Please check your child's Tuesday folder each week and follow us on Facebook.
Teachers have begun fall conferences. We look forward to meeting with each of you and partnering together to help each child achieve success this school year.
As always, we value and appreciate your input!
Proud to be a Warrior,
Amber

We are working on letters Tt, Bb, Ss, and Mm. We are talking about our five senses and describing what we can see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. Next week we will be discussing our families and how families are the same and different. We are asking each student to send in a family photo. It can be sent digitally through Class Dojo.
Please work with your child on writing their name and spelling it aloud by saying each letter.
We would like to remind you that with changing temperatures extra clothes may need to be traded out and jackets need names written inside. We try to stay hydrated throughout the day. You can help us by sending a water bottle with your child daily. A refillable bottle works best.
It is hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of the 1st 9 weeks! Students are working hard to make progress daily. Please have students continue working on writing their names and identifying the letters that make their names, identifying letters A-Z by letter name, identifying letter sounds, counting forward and backward from 10, writing numbers to 10, identifying numbers to 10, and reviewing colors. Here is a sneak peek of what is to come in our learning:
- Reading: In reading we will wrap up unit 1 and begin unit 2 with a theme of living together. Weekly, we will interact with and analyze different genres of texts to include informational texts, fictional texts, and persuasive texts. Throughout unit 2 students will continue to practice skills like identifying main idea, generating questions, making connections, and using text evidence.
- Math: In math we will finish up comparing numbers 0-10 and begin working with numbers 0-20. We start out by counting, reading, and writing numbers. Then we will move on to making sets up to 20, comparing sets, and then generating a number that is one more/one less.
- Science: In science we will finish up exploring light and begin learning about objects and patterns in the sky. Students will learn and utilize vocabulary such as moon, star, and sun.
- Social Studies: In social studies we will begin our unit on Government and Citizens. Within this unit we will discuss Government leadership, citizens, and important citizens in the United States.
In the month of October-
- In Phonics, first grade will continue short vowels in the medial position of words and learn l blends (sl, bl, cl, fl, gl, pl) at the beginning of words. (Ex: flag, class, etc.)
- In Shared Reading, students will be using informational text, exploring main idea, make inferences, and explore author’s purpose to answer the unit themed question: How do living things grow and change?
- In Math, students will continue to work on basic math facts, however we will be moving up to 20.
- In Science, students will describe how some changes caused by heat may be reversed such as melting butter and other changes cannot be reversed such as cooking an egg or baking a cake.
- In Social Studies, first grade will learn about government and citizens such as important citizens in Texas History, patriotism, national and Texas symbols and national holidays.
Parents/Guardians,
We have been working so hard already this school year!
In math, students will work with number lines and then we will begin learning strategies for adding and subtracting 10’s and 100’s. For reading and writing we will begin informational text, using text features and exploring text structure. This month in social studies, we are learning about the functions of the Government and citizenship. In science students will be researching force and motion. They will be investigating how objects can push and pull and what objects do when they collide.
- Our unit theme in Language Arts will be Interactions in which we will read realistic fiction, informational and persuasive texts. We will begin writing how-to articles. For Grammar, we will continue our studies of Parts of Speech.
- In Math, we will be beginning our unit in Multiplication, which many students have expressed a desire to learn. We encourage students to practice their weekly multiplication facts daily.
- In our study of Science, we will focus on Forces and Motion.
- In Social Studies, our focus will be on government including important documents and how it works.
4th grade has an exciting month ahead. We will be reading and writing about animal adaptations. We will also work on writing a travel article about our favorite destination. In math we will become proficient in multi-digit multiplication and begin working on division strategies. Forces and energy will be our focus for experimentation in Science and Indians and Explorers will fill our minds in Social Studies. It’s going to a wonderful October for learning!
In 5th grade, we are:
- Reading-reading informational text and realistic fiction to evaluate details, explain author’s purpose, analyze text structures and point of view in reading.
- Writing-Developing informational text in writing.
- Social Studies-Exploring values of democracy, early colonization, and human interaction in social studies.
- Math-Dividing whole numbers and decimals using the standard algorithm and models in math.
- Science-Exploring force and energy in our world in science.
As a reminder, our instructional time extends to the end of the day. When students are checked out early, they could miss out on key concepts and feedback. Additionally, we want you to know we feel very supported by you and appreciate you greatly.
Fall is finally here Warriors! This month we will be working on catching and throwing, then we will be moving to scooter games in our next unit. After the fall break we will be going over our Go, Slow and Whoa foods. Please make sure your child comes ready for PE and wearing active shoes, no crocs or slides, boots, etc. We want all of our warriors to be safe and have fun in PE.
Thanks
PE Team!
The fall season is upon us, and our students are “Leading like Warriors” in music class. Students are learning and singing songs about this season and the upcoming holidays as well as discovering all the “nuts and bolts” that make up the wonderful world of music. The exciting sounds of musical instruments and the appreciation of different world music make up the days here at Maude Moore Wood. Students have been learning about the interesting cultural folk music of the African country of Mali.
Our wonderful 3rd and 4th graders are beginning to learn music for an exciting performance scheduled for October the 24th. Friends and family will enjoy a wide-ranging program of songs of Americana, movement, and body percussion. Families of 3rd and 4th grade students should be receiving an information sheet and commitment form for this performance. Please have your students bring back these forms to the home room teacher.
Our Warrior Choir is starting rehearsals soon and we look forward to an exciting and entertaining December program you don’t want to miss. More details coming soon.
October is an exciting month for Capturing Kids Heart as we embrace Self-Direction. We are focused on leading ourselves to be who we want to be. We strive to be goal oriented as we look into our future with a positive sense of who we are, who others are, and our responsibility to make positive choices. Let's do this by finding the good, making a plan, and affirming daily. Be sure to ask your student the conversation starters at the end of our monthly newsletter.
Guidance Highlights for this month include:
Red Ribbon Week (10/23-10/31) Unity Day (10/31)and Bully Prevention (October).
