Hide and Seek
Principal's Super Science Stuff
December - Force, Motion, Energy
Dec. Week 3: Simple Machines - Inclined Plane
2 Choices (or save one for the break)
Marble Roller Coaster AND/OR Pool Noodle Marble Run
Step 1: Plan your design with the Marble Roller Coaster THEN over Winter Break level up with the Pool Noodle Marble Run!
Step 1: Marble Roller Coaster
Materials:
Toilet Paper & Paper Towel Rolls
Tape
Marble
Scissors
Optional: Piece of cardboard
Optional: extra circle of tube or small bowl to catch the marble at the end.
Investigate:
Cut several toilet paper roll tubes in half.
Stand up your paper towel roll and tape it to the table (or piece of cardboard)
Tape 2 of your cut tubes to your paper towel roll “towers”
Take 2 toilet paper rolls and tape them together to make a smaller tower and attach it to the table
Take 1 toilet paper roll and attach it to the table for the smallest tower.
Use the leftover half rolls to finish creating your roller coaster.
Drop your marble at the top and see what happens!
Results:
Take a picture and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Conclusion:
Did it work the 1st time? What did you have to change? How did you make it better?
Step 2: LEVEL UP: Pool Noodle Marble Run!
Materials:
Pool Noodles (at the Dollar Tree)
Painter’s Tape
Marble(s)
Scissors or Knife (you will need an adult for this part)
Investigation:
An adult should cut up the pool noodles into different sized chunks (serrated knife works best)
An adult should slice (or cut) the pool noodles down the side creating half-circles.
Tape your half noodles to the wall to create the run - make sure your tape is long enough to over the whole bottom of the noodle - it helps if the tape is on the noodle before trying to stick it to the wall.
Once the noodles are attached to the wall, try it out!
Results:
Take a picture and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Conclusion:
Did it work the 1st time? What did you have to change? Were you able to extend it or make it longer?
