Winter Sports TBI Awareness Month
As the winter season ramps up, students across middle and high schools dive into activities like skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey. While these sports offer fun, exercise, and team building, they also bring increased risk for injuries, particularly traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). The month of January is Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to spotlight the critical role protective equipment plays in keeping students safe. Let's work together to raise awareness and ensure that middle and high school students stay safe while enjoying winter sports. Protective equipment isn't just a piece of gear-it's a critical investment in their health and future.
INFLUENZA
Flu season is in full swing, but it is not too late to protect yourself and those around you by getting vaccinated. The flu vaccine reduces your risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and missed days of school or work. Protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community by scheduling a flu shot today!
Computer Vision Syndrome
With increased screen time for both schoolwork and social activities, teenagers are at risk of developing computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain.
Symptoms:
Eye strain or discomfort after prolonged screen use
Blurred vision or difficulty focusing
Dry eyes or irritation
Headaches or neck and shoulder pain
What to Do:
Home Care: Encourage regular breaks from screens, proper lighting, and ergonomic device setups. Adjust screen brightness and use blue light filters to reduce strain.
When to See a Doctor: Consult an optometrist if symptoms persist despite taking breaks and adjusting screen habits. They may recommend special lenses designed for screen use or provide other strategies to alleviate digital eye strain.
