Where Learning is Personal
Friday, May 2, 2025
From the Principal
It’s hard to believe, but we are just a little over a month from the end of the school year. With just a few weeks left, we focus on helping students finish strong—academically, socially, and emotionally. Classrooms are still focused on meaningful learning, and students continue to show effort, creativity, and connections in their work.
Teacher Appreciation Week is next week, and I can't emphasize enough how much our teachers dedicate themselves to this school. They show up each day with dedication, care, and consistently go above and beyond to support our students and each other. Please take a moment next week to help us celebrate the outstanding educators who make Winfield such a special place to learn and grow.
Thank you for the kind messages and gestures shared for Principal Appreciation Day. It truly means a lot, and I’m grateful to serve a community that deeply values its people.

Staff Appreciation Week
Staff Appreciation Week (May 5-9) is coming soon! We have a whole week of treats planned to make our Winfield 34 Staff feel extra special! We are asking for your help in making this week unforgettable for our staff! Here are some ways you can help:
Write letters of appreciation to staff: Send a note to one or more staff members thanking them for their efforts - these are compiled and given to staff in a special way. These notes are greatly appreciated and can lift spirits on difficult days! See the staff list here and drop off your letters to Karen Sabados (0S770 Garfield St.) by Sunday, 5/4.
Donate to Staff Raffle: Each day, a few staff members are selected at random to choose from a spread of items and gift cards. Each staff member is selected by the end of the week. We are accepting donations of small gifts around $10-15 to donate to the raffle. Some ideas include: gift cards, planters, flowers, candy, wine, trinkets/gadgets, electronic accessories, candles, lotions, etc. Donations can be dropped off to Kelly Kurzer (0S708 Garfield Street) by Sunday 5/4. Primary Team News
For the past 21 days, first graders have been learning about the development of chickens to go along with learning about life cycles in science. Students have been observing the changes inside the egg by candling (shining a bright light under the egg). For the past 3 days, the eggs have been on “lockdown” and cannot be touched or moved to prepare for hatching. This morning, we had our first pip! We can’t wait to see how many eggs hatch!
"**FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE!!** After 21 long days, we have successfully started our hatching in first grade! We currently have 5 chicks out of their eggs while others are still working on joining the outside world."
Intermediate Ideas
The third graders started a chapter on fractions this week in math. They learned how to identify, generate equivalents, and compare fractions. In reading, the focus was on identifying and using figurative language. This week in 3/4 Brach, the students finished reading a story called My BFF's Secret. It was about a girl named Becca and her best friend Annie who turned out to be an alien from another planet. Becca needs to make a decision to either tell the world about her best friend or keep her identity a secret. This story made the students really think about the concepts of friendship and loyalty. The students enriched their vocabulary by solving and writing analogies. They learned the meanings of some really interesting words like roustabout, gross, and perplexed. Finally, the students are continuing to research a topic that interests them. They will use the app Book Creator to write and publish their own book about their topic. It was a busy week! This week in 5th grade, students began a new novel study called Ungifted by Gordon Korman. In math, students analyzed patterns and datasets.
Middle School Messages
The middle school students are working hard to finish the year well with their curriculum units. 8th grade has done a great job with the US Government and Constitution unit, especially before their government trip to Springfield. In Social Studies, each grade is researching their choice of topics in specific categories which relate to a problem that needs to be solved or an issue with multiple sides: 6th grade - school/education related or Winfield/suburb related; 7th grade - global problem or issue; 8th grade - national/state or Chicago related problem or issue. The goal at the end is to raise awareness in an unbiased way, and to offer a solution or compromise.

Track
