What's the Scoop?
SFSD Child Nutrition Newsletter
CN Reminder
Free school meals are ending this summer. Next school year parents/guardians will again be responsible for paying for school meals. Those who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will be charged. Those who DO qualify should take advantage of Free/Reduced cost option.
If you believe that your family might meet the income eligibility requirements to qualify for Free or Reduced School Meals, PLEASE fill out the 2021-22 form NOW. If approved, your qualification will last through the first 30 days of school.
This is meant to give you additional time to apply for Free and Reduced meals for the rest of the school year because the 22-23 form for the full school year is not released until July.
If your family receives SNAP or TANF benefits as of July 1, 2022 or after, you are automatically qualified for free school meals and do not need to complete the application. You will receive a letter from the Child Nutrition office confirming that you are approved for the 2022-23 school year.
RDN Recommendation: Practice Celebrating with Non-Food Activities
From birthday cake to taco Tuesday, there's a food for every event and every theme. Special occasion treats are great, but sometimes they start to add up and crowd out our healthy options that should be emphasized daily. Help set your child (and yourself) up for success by emphasizing non-food activities and rewards.
Here are some ideas for non-food activities that can double as rewards for your child:
Go to the park
Visit Air Madness
Go for a walk (bonus points for bringing a magnifying glass and making it an adventure)
Dress up in costumes and take pictures
Host family karaoke night
Go to the zoo or butterfly house
Make an obstacle course with items from home and have a race
Family work out (yoga, walking, biking, circuits, etc)
Going ice skating or roller skating
Explore the Washington Pavillion (first Friday of the month is free)
Get your hair or nails done
Go bug hunting
Visit the humane society or a pet store
Make your own scavenger hunt at home
Write and illustrate a book with your home craft supplies
Go to the library
Make a fort (inside or outside)
Go shopping for new clothes/toys
Go to a pool (hotels work great during winter months)
Recipe to Try at Home
The BEST Roasted Asparagus
- 1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed
- 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 oz parmesan, grated
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 lemon, thinly sliced
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Lay the lemon slices out on your baking pan.
Toss the asparagus with the oil, garlic, and seasonings.
Lay it on top of the lemon slices, and sprinkle it with the parmesan.
Bake 12-15 min until just tender. Do not over bake.
Enjoy!
