Summer Reading
Dear Families:
Summer is quickly approaching! As in years past, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District has a summer reading plan for students entering PreKindergarten through 12th grade. And this year, we are continuing to encourage all families to enroll in the Heights Library Summer Reading Program - Read, Renew, Repeat. Summer Reading at the Heights Libraries is going green (and digital), with less paper but all the same fun. Log your reading, earn raffle tickets, and enter prize drawings right from your device. It’s simple. Register on Beanstack at http://heightslibrary.beanstack.org/ and log your daily reading for chances to win awesome grand prizes! And don’t forget to stop by any Heights Library branch to select your prize book after registration and again after you’ve read for 30 days.
All links included below are available on the CH-UH School District website (www.chuh.org) under the “Academics” tab, Summer Reading 2024.
Families of students entering Preschool or who are of preschool age, are invited to participate in the Heights Library Summer Reading Program. If your child is younger than 4 and a half years old and has not yet been enrolled in Imagination Library, follow this link and receive a free book each month!
Students entering grades K-5 are encouraged to read throughout the summer (which includes time spent listening to an older reader or an audiobook) and participate in the Heights Library Summer Reading Program. Consider using this graphic organizer to guide your thinking while reading. To help your child choose books, a list of suggested titles (grades K-2 and grades 3-5) is available on the CH-UH School District website under the “Academics” tab. Students entering grades K-5 are encouraged to read any material and are not limited to the titles on the provided list. Encourage students to find something that they want to read. If they can read it or listen to it, it counts!
Students entering grades 6-8 are also expected to read during the summer months. Middle school students will select an age appropriate book and consider how the characters or people in their book reflect the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile attributes. Here are step-by-step directions for students that might be helpful. If you are looking for book suggestions, check out this list of titles. You are also invited to participate in the Heights Library Summer Reading Program.
Students entering grades 9-12 have each received a book to read during the summer in preparation for the 2024-2025 school year. For information on all high school summer reading, click here.
Here are a few ways to access ebooks at no cost. The Heights Libraries have a way to access ebooks; follow the directions here. The app Open eBooks has access. Check out this resource from INFOhio to explore a variety of topics and access reading materials. Finally, check out this resource from GreatSchools.org which includes specific information about reading and learning.
As a community, we are developing lifelong readers!
College and Career Fair at Rox El on May 16 and 17
Students will explore Northeast Ohio's top jobs and growing fields in a fun, hands-on experience. They will cycle through multiple centers to hear about a variety of jobs and participate in different simulations at Rox El on May 16 for grades 3-5 and May 17 for grades K-2. This should be a wonderful experience for our students!
Lunch on the Lawn May 30
All families are invited to attend our annual Lunch on the Lawn on the Thursday, May 30, which is our last day of school. The classes will be eating lunch for the first 30 minutes with their families and their teacher and then they will have the next 30 minutes to dance and listen to the DJ. The times for this are the following: Kindergarten and First Grade 11:00-12:00, Second Grade 11:30-12:30 (this is the correct time, last week had the wrong time), Fifth Grade 12:00-1:00, Third Grade 12:15-1:15 and Fourth Grade 12:30-1:30. Classes will come out at their lunch time and stand in their lineup on the playground at the beginning and end of lunch. This will help our teachers take attendance at the beginning and end of lunch. A permission slip is going home next week that allows families to take their child home at the end of lunch. Teachers will have a checklist to ensure the students are signed out. That is why we are lining up at the beginning and end of lunch. Thank you for your help with this.
Families can bring a blanket and/or a lawn chair to sit on. We are trying to limit the seating for lunch to the grassy area in the back side of the property so we are not close to the street. Please look for the sign with the classroom teacher's name on it and find a spot in that area. We will be sending a link to let us know which families are attending that day and if their child(ren) will go home with them after lunch.
This is a really fun event that our staff, students and families look forward to every year. Not just because it is the last day of school, but it is a great community building event!
The District has adopted a plan for communications with persons with disabilities, which is available at the following link: Communication Plan. The plan establishes procedures to ensure that the District's communications with persons with disabilities, including applicants, participants, members of the public, and companions with disabilities, are as effective as its communications with others.
