Tidewater Consortium Secures $9 Million Teacher Quality Partnership Grant from U.S. Department of Education
Suffolk Public Schools is proud to be a part of the Tidewater Educators Consortium and one of 18 recipients to receive the U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Grant. The funds from this grant will support division-wide initiatives aimed at recruiting, preparing, and developing a diverse educational workforce.
With this allocation, we can improve our current outreach programs to attract candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, offer scholarships and financial support for aspiring educators, and present professional development opportunities designed to enhance cultural competency and inclusivity. Most significantly, the funds will support and grow our mentorship program and help us continue to proactively approach the national teacher shortage impacting our schools. The Teacher Quality Grant opens many doors for Suffolk Public Schools to ensure that candidates receive comprehensive preparation to thrive in our diverse educational classrooms.

Disability Awareness Month (nationally celebrated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month) is celebrated annually in October to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities to the workforce. The theme for 2024 is "Access to Good Jobs for All". During this month, it is important to take time to educate yourselves and others about the many and varied contributions of individuals with disabilities to our community and within our school division. Meet our Special Education Team for the 2024-2025 school year!
October Spirit Days: Bullying Prevention Month, Breast Cancer Awareness & Domestic Violence Awareness
Suffolk Public Schools recognizes several national awareness days during October. We ask that our school community join in our division-wide initiative to acknowledge the following:
October 16: Unity Day/Orange
During this signature National Bullying Prevention Month event, we encourage our school community to wear orange to symbolize unity in kindness, inclusion, and courage to prevent bullying, particularly in schools and online.
October 17: Domestic Violence Awareness/Go Purple
We encourage our staff and student body to wear purple to symbolize peace, courage, survival, honor, and a commitment to domestic violence awareness.

National School Lunch Week: October 14 - 18, 2024
The Virginia Department of Education Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs encourages schools to promote and celebrate National School Lunch Week (NSLW) during the week of October 14-18, 2024, with the theme “School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure.”
Learning is tough work—and kids need fuel if they’re going to learn! That’s why a healthy midday meal is crucial to the growing children who go to school. Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW), this annual observance has promoted the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom. We thank our Food and Nutritional Services team for all that they do to ensure that our students are energized and ready to learn!
All Suffolk Reads: The World According to Humphrey - Kick's Off on Friday, November 1
Suffolk Public Schools is excited to kick off another year of All District Reads, featuring the delightful book The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. This district-wide initiative ensures that every elementary student receives their own copy of the book, creating a shared reading experience that connects classrooms and families throughout Suffolk. Thanks to the generous support of local partners like the Rotary, the Birdsongs, and TowneBank, we are thrilled to bring this program to life once again. ADR kicks off on Friday, November 1st. Stay tuned for more information!
