A brief introduction to the art studio and the newsletter
Welcome to the first Deerfield Elementary Art Studio newsletter. My name is Mark Pendl, and I'll be updating this about once a month on happenings, projects, events, and all the good things that go on in our studio. Normally, students come to art once a week for one hour. Make sure to ask them about what art they're making!
About the Art Studio, at a glance...
Art Club
6th grade students will be able to join an after school Art Club! Details about this exciting opportunity will be sent to families in a few weeks.
Student Opportunity
The Youth Art Month (YAM) regional art show happens in March, five talented artists are chosen for this yearly event. Their artwork is shown in up to two different galleries in Madion!
Fibers Center
One of the opportunities for creating great art will include the Fibers Center. Students may freely engage in low-risk experimentation with yarn, string, thread, felt, cloth and more! Donations to the Fibers Center are always welcome, these can be sent to school with your student or dropped at the main office!
3D Center (formerly the Art Trap)
Through the 3D center we teach beginning joinery skills like flanges and gussets, discovering how to make things stand up and hold together (I like to call it "Emergent Engineering"). Donations to the 3D center are always needed! Cardboard tubes, corks, popsicle sticks, old beans or corn kernels, bits of wire, old electronics (pretty much anything) are always welcome! These can be sent to school with your student or dropped off at the main office.
Observation and Research
All students are given time to work with ceramic clay. 5th grade students observe and research an animal in order to create a more authentic artwork.
Experimentation
Last year we made too much paper pulp in Kindergarten, so 1st graders used it to create paper pulp "monsters" that attacked a city they created. Artists are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and discover new ways of making art.
Sharing
Student artwork is shown through the school year in the hallways and cafeteria. Artist statements help students connect to artwork and reflect upon their own art making.
