Back to School Family Newsletter
From the Office of The Superintendent
September 4, 2024
Dear Arlington Public Schools Families,
As we begin new school year, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome back to all our students, families, and staff. The start of the school year always brings a sense of excitement, possibility, and a renewed commitment to the success and well-being of every child in our district.
This year, we are making a few changes to how we communicate with our community. The Superintendent's newsletter will now be released quarterly instead of monthly, allowing us to provide more comprehensive updates and insights into the great work happening across our schools. I encourage you to stay connected and engaged as we share important information, celebrate achievements, and explore new opportunities for our students. Your student's school will be your main source of communication in staying up to date about your child's experience in school, important events, and other updates. This guidebook contains many opportunities for getting involved with your child's school.
The APS Welcome and Resource Center will also be sending out a subscription-based monthly family newsletter beginning in October which will include additional information about school and community based events and forums happening through our new APS Family University, as well as resources and supports available to your family. To subscribe to this monthly newsletter please add your email address to this list.
I am incredibly proud of the work APS has done to improve access to excellent learning, educational services, and other supports over the past few years, and we also know there is more work to be done in the year ahead. I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2024-25 - a year that is sure to be full of of growth, learning, and joy for our students.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Arlington Public Schools.
Warm Regards and Welcome Back,
Dr. Elizabeth C. Homan
Superintendent, Arlington Public Schools

Back to School Nights
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Back-to-School Nights – a fantastic opportunity for you to get a firsthand glimpse into your child's educational journey this year.
Back-to-School Nights are informative sessions designed to bridge the gap between home and school. This is your chance to meet your child's teachers, gain insights into classroom routines, curriculum plans, and discover how you can actively support your child's learning experience.
Here are a few reasons you should attend:
- Meet the Educators: Connect with your child's teachers and learn about their teaching philosophies, goals, and the classroom environment. Establishing this personal connection sets the foundation for a strong partnership throughout the school year.
- Curriculum Insights: Gain a deeper understanding of the subjects and topics your child will be exploring. Teachers will outline the curriculum, share teaching methodologies, and provide insights into how you can reinforce learning at home.
- Classroom Dynamics: Get a feel for the classroom atmosphere and routines. Understand daily schedules, homework expectations, and communication channels, ensuring a smooth and supportive learning experience for your child.
- Ask Questions: This is the perfect space to ask questions, seek clarifications, and address any concerns you might have. Open communication between parents and educators is crucial for your child's academic success.
- Community Building: Back-to-School Nights provide an opportunity to connect with other families in your child's class. Building a supportive network of fellow parents can enrich your family's school experience.
