KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
What an honor it was to present Anne Kiely and Beth Beach with the Teacher of the Year and Professional of the Year awards this week. They exude such joy, positivity, and pure love of their work! Thank you to the PTA for the preparation and contributions to the celebration. Thank you also to those who served on the selection committee.
Continuing in celebratory fashion, this week we had the opportunity to appreciate and thank our school counselor, Mrs. Jennifer Weeks. We are so fortunate to have such a child-centered, caring, nurturing, dedicated counselor. She impacts all our students in such a gentle, patient way. Happy School Counselor Week, Mrs. Weeks!
Please take a moment to consider declaring candidacy for our open School Governance Council position. Northwood has one parent/guardian up for election this spring, with the two-year term to begin in July. Additional information can be found below as well as within the district links below. You can also contact any of the current committee members to get additional information. The Northwood SGC works together to support the work of the school’s strategic plan. The committee meets roughly every other month on Wednesday mornings.
Enjoy Super Bowl weekend! School still starts at the normal time on Monday morning 😉
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
MUSIC NOTES WITH MS. DAHL
Did you know that your child is taking piano during their music time? I am so happy to inform you that we are about halfway through our piano unit. During this 9-week unit all grade levels are learning how to play the piano and apply musical skills to an instrument. We started right after the New Year, and we will finish in the middle of March.
Piano uses both sides of the brain, helps develop strong eye -hand coordination, and provides a solid foundation for musical elements which can help students learn any other instrument. Piano is also known to relieve stress and build self-confidence, but mostly it's a lot of fun. The benefits are endless, and I am so excited that we are able to provide this opportunity at Northwood Elementary.
Musically yours,
Kimberly Dahl
NORTHWOOD'S 2024-2025 TEACHER AND PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to Northwood's 2024-25 Teacher of the Year and Professional of the Year.
Anne Kiely (IRR), Teacher of the Year
Beth Beach (Media Para), Professional of the Year
We are grateful for your time, talent, and the love that you pour into our Explorers!
NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELOR WEEK
We would like to send our love and appreciation to Northwood's amazing school counselor, Mrs. Jennifer Weeks. Her dedication to our students, families, staff and the entire Northwood community is evident in all that she does. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Weeks at Northwood and celebrate her today and all throughout the year!
JANUARY PBIS CELEBRATION
For our January PBIS celebration, we got to do COSMIC BOWLING! This is always a crowd favorite. Mr. Pearch spent the week leading up to our celebration teaching the students how to bowl in PE, and they got to enjoy some time bowling in twinkle lights, dancing to music, and hanging out with friends. We love to celebrate students who are respectful, responsible, and engaged here at Northwood!
VALENTINE'S DAY MESSAGE FROM FCS
From Fulton County Schools
As we approach Valentine’s Day, it is important to ensure that all homemade candy, desserts, baked goods, or other edible items are not to be sold or distributed during school hours, and that appropriate store-bought items are delivered to the administration. Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students with allergies, etc. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package.
From Northwood
With Valentine's Day approaching , make sure to review information from homeroom teachers regarding their plans for that day. As a reminder, no baked goods (homemade or store bought) should be sent to school.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH: ROSWELL STUDENT ART EXHIBIT
Every year, Northwood students participate in a collaborative art piece that celebrates African Americans. The artwork is displayed in the Roswell City Hall Rotunda during Black History Month as a part of the Roswell Roots Festival. This year, 2nd - 5th grade students learned about Ruby Bridges and created a portrait based on her iconic photo and quote, "Don't follow the path. Go where there is no path and start a trail." The Exhibit will be on display January 29 - March 29.
ROSWELL ROOTS: CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Looking for ways to celebrate Black History Month? Roswell Roots is a community-wide, month-long festival that honors our diverse community and celebrates Black History Month. Roswell Roots aims to educate, impact, and promote cultural awareness.
Programs and events focus on welcoming all community members and offers an opportunity for all ages to engage and participate. Activities include music, poetry, storytelling, tours and more. Our very own Northwood artwork (see the story above) will be on display in the Roswell City Hall Rotunda through March 29. For more information, visit Roswell365.com/categories/roswell-roots/

CHECKMATE: NEW KIOSK FOR CHECKING VISITORS IN AND OUT
Fulton County Schools has replaced the Raptor system with CheckMate to make the visitor check in and out process easier and more efficient. CheckMate is the same system that we are currently using for students. Visitors will use the kiosk to the left with the large monitor; and student check in and out will remain on the laptop to the right.
All visitors will simply need to scan their driver's license and the system will print a visitor sticker to be worn at all times inside the building. When leaving, please make sure to scan the sticker to officially check out.
