Dear Preschool Families,
Punctuality and consistent attendance are the building blocks for a successful school experience. Missing too many days of school can have a serious impact on learning - and arriving late can be disruptive for your child and others. Please make sure your child arrives on school property no later than 8:35 AM or 12:10 PM in order to be in the classroom at our start times.
If you need to report that your child will be absent or tardy for the day, log into the Parent Portal and complete the absence form. If dropping them off tardy, please sign them in at the office window.
Picture makeups and retakes will happen on Friday, November 15th.
- If your child is retaking their pictures, previous pictures must be returned.
- If your child is taking their picture for the first time and you need a picture envelope, please reach out to your classroom teacher.
- Pictures can also be ordered online at mylifetouch.com. (Picture Day ID: EVTTJTG4G )
- There is also discount code for 10% off your order (Code: F202410OFF)
Thank you for your continued partnership and support!
Sincerely,
Barb Golik
Principal

Notes from the Nurse
Keeping our kids active as the weather gets colder can be challenging. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends layering your child in several thin layers to help keep them dry and warm while enjoying outdoor activities.
The three-layer approach + accessories is a good guide to follow:
Base Layer– sits close to the skin and wicks moisture keeping your little one feeling dry. Wool or polyester are ideal for a base layer.
Insulation Layer– holds the natural heat little bodies produce. A wool sweater or a fleece jacket are both good choices.
Shell Layer– protects against rain and wind so the other layers continue to work. Choose a material that is wind and waterproof but still breathable.
Accessories: warm boots (snow), mittens, scarf, and a hat.
As a reminder, students will continue to go outside if temperatures are greater than 25 degrees. Please remember to dress your child appropriately for the weather.
Weather Reminders
As the temperatures become colder each day, we want to remind families to please send students to school dressed appropriately for the weather.
- Our students go outside between 25° F and 90°F and spend 20-25 minutes outdoors on most days.
- If your child is in need of winter clothing (coats, mittens, hats, boots, etc) please contact the Early Learning Center office at 847-827-4165 or firststeps@emsd63.org.
Winter Closings: What You Need to Know
Take a minute to review D63's Winter Weather Closing Information. A few key points:
If buildings close, students shift to remote learning.
Decisions to close schools are made jointly with other local school districts.
If buildings are going to close, expect an email, text, and phone call. Information will also be posted on our website and social media.

An Introduction to Digital Wellbeing and Online Safety for East Maine SD 63 Parents and Caregivers
Join D63 on November 16 at 6:00 PM for this live webinar presented by our online safety partner Linewize and familiarize yourself with the tools available to help you keep your children safe and well in the digital world. Linewize's Director of Wellbeing, Teodora Pavkovic, will share insights into some of the main online safety risks children encounter today and the strategies to minimize them, and she will guide you through using tools like the ABC approach to children's online safety and your district's Online Safety Hub. Former principal and Linewize's Director of Community, Greg Hall, will do a live demo of the Qustodio parent app and guide you through the set-up process. Your hosts will also be taking your questions at the end of the webinar, so be sure to join us live. See you there!
Backpack Tags
Please make sure to send your child to school with their backpack each day. Attached to their backpack will be a tag (an example is pictured) that helps us identify each student and the classroom that they need to go to. We ask that you do not remove these from your child's backpack as they help all of our staff make sure that students get to their correct classrooms. If the tag for your student has been misplaced please let the teacher know and we will get you a new one.
If you are in need of a backpack for your child, please let the classroom teacher know and we can help to secure one.
New Parent Communication System
This year the district has transitioned to a new parent communication system called BrightArrow. Texts from our new parent communication system, will come from 79041, and families must "opt in" to receive them.
Text "YES" to 79041 receive text message and never miss an update again!
REPORTING ABSENCES
If your child has to miss school due to illness or any other reason, please submit via the Parent Portal.
How to use the Parent Portal to report your child’s absence:
- All absences must be submitted on the morning of the day your child will miss school - NOT the night before. Once you log into the Portal, you’ll choose your child’s name and navigate to a list of online forms. Select and complete the “Absence Form,” and then submit.
- You can find detailed, step-by-step instructions at any time on our District 63 website.
