February - Problem Solvers
We hope that February finds you well and thriving! As we embrace the spirit of problem-solving this month as our PAWS focus, we are delighted to share the incredible initiatives our students are undertaking to make our school community a better place.
Student Council's Heartfelt Initiative:
Our dedicated Student Council members have been hard at work this month, collecting personal care items for those in need. Their compassionate efforts are making a significant impact, showcasing the power of our students' empathy and commitment to helping others. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the student council leadership, Ms. Friedman and Ms. Caddell for their leadership and support of our students as they work to make a difference in our community.
Student Senate Promoting Problem Solving and Respect:
The Student Senate has been actively engaged in fostering a positive and respectful environment during lunchtime. Recognizing the importance of conflict resolution, they have initiated projects to improve lunch play time and the lunch tables. We look forward to implementing their positive solutions and making our lunch space a place where students can connect, share, and enjoy each other respectfully. We commend the Student Senate for their leadership and dedication to creating a harmonious school environment.
Odyssey of the Mind Competition:
This weekend, several of our talented students will be showcasing their problem-solving skills at the Odyssey of the Mind competition. This unique event challenges participants to work collaboratively to solve creative and complex problems. We wish our students the best of luck as they compete and demonstrate the incredible teamwork and problem-solving abilities that are nurtured here at Lietz Elementary School.
Celebrating Problem Solvers at Home:
We encourage our Lietz Lions and their families to join us in promoting the theme of problem-solving at home. Here are some fun and engaging ways to reinforce this valuable skill with your children:
Family Brainstorming Sessions: Dedicate time for family brainstorming sessions where everyone can contribute ideas to solve a common challenge.
Creative Problem-Solving Games: Play games that encourage critical thinking and creativity, such as puzzles, board games, or collaborative storytelling.
Acts of Kindness: Encourage your children to perform acts of kindness for others, reinforcing the importance of empathy and compassion for problems they may observe at home and in the community.
Problem-Solving Reflections: Engage in reflective conversations with your children, discussing how they approached and solved challenges throughout the day.
Thank you for being an integral part of our Lietz community. Together, we can continue to nurture problem solvers who will make a positive impact on the world. We look forward to celebrating our students who are exemplifying problem solving at school at our morning rally on February 16th.
Community School Facilities Survey
Following the valuable feedback received from USD employees in the Fall concerning facilities project priorities, we are now seeking input from the broader community. We invite you to take a few minutes to complete this survey. Your perspectives will play a significant role in assisting USD in prioritizing areas that require improvement and guiding us in the creation of new spaces or enhancements that will best serve the needs of our students and community. Thank you for your continued support.

On February 9th, from 6pm – 8pm we will be hosting one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Sweetheart Dance. The Sweetheart Dance is a time for Lietz families to enjoy a night of dancing and refreshments and we hope that you are able to attend. Similar to previous years, the dance will be held at Dartmouth Middle School. Below are key details about the dance:
Ticket Purchases:
$10 per student (One adult free with paid child).
Ticket purchases can be made HERE. Please secure tickets early, we expect this event to be in high demand. The cut off will be 9:00pm on February 8th.
Additional Details:
Please only one adult chaperone per student as we want to make sure we have enough room for all students that want to attend.
- One adult can have multiple students with them as long as they are appropriately supervised.
Younger siblings will be allowed to attend but to ensure an optimal experience and create lasting memories, it is essential for chaperones to diligently supervise the children.
If you would like to volunteer for set-up or stations during the dance, please see the sign-up sheet below. Volunteers are needed for this event to be successful!

2024 USD Creativity Showcase
We are beyond thrilled to announce the upcoming 2024 USD Creativity Showcase! Our theme is Technicolor Dreams. All of our TK through 8th grade students are invited to submit their creative work via our website.
Masterpieces will be displayed and shared at USD’s Health & Wellness Community Event on Saturday, March 23rd, 2024 at Union Middle School.

Future Chefs
Sodexo, USD’s student nutrition consultant, invites students to participate in a culinary competition! The Future Chefs event is a cook off between four school districts - Cambrian, Luther Burbank, Saratoga and Union. Three students will be chosen from each district to compete in the finals taking place on March 27th, 2024. The local press will be invited to take pictures and parents and teachers can view and taste the final product during the reception portion of the event.
Student Council Project - Sharing is Caring!
From January 17th to February 16th, Lietz Student Council will lead our student community in Sharing is Caring - a personal care product drive to help our neighbors in need. Lietz’s student council will be collecting new toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, and soap to donate to Sacred Heart Community Service for our neighbors in need. Please stick to the items listed above, as those are the items of greatest need.
All collected items will be donated to Sacred Heart Community Service. Sacred Heart’s mission is to build a community free from poverty by creating hope, opportunity, and action. They provide essential services, work together to improve lives, organize for justice, and inspire the community to love, serve, and share.
Starting January 17th, students can bring new toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, and soap for our San Jose neighbors in need. Bring these items to your classroom and student council leaders will drop by twice a week to pick them up.
Thank you for caring!
