Field Trips!
We have rescheduled the Biltmore Field Trip!
Our tour of the Biltmore Estate will be Thursday, February 12th. We ask that students dress "as nice as possible!" (This is great because the school dance is the same day- they will already be looking their best!) We will be sending home a new permission slip for this trip. For those of you who haven't payed the $20 for this trip- I'll attach a note to the permission slip. If you have already paid- you of course do not have to pay again!
Raleigh Payments and Paperwork:
If you have not sent in your first payment or paperwork for the Raleigh Trip please do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this please ask.Reading Log

What We Are Learning
- Reading- This week in Reading, we will continue to focus on nonfiction and informational texts. We will be spending time over the next two weeks discussing how what we read can be organized. The different ways non-fiction work can be organized is: chronological order(time), cause/effect, comparison, and problem/solution. Students will have the option to use a Chromebook to begin researching their chosen topic for our NC History Writing Unit.
- Read Aloud: The 4th grade team decided our read aloud book for this quarter would be "Zombie Baseball Beatdown" to our classes. We watched a great video introduction to the book by it's author, Paulo Bacigalupi, to get excited about the book. This is also a Battle of the Books selection- so many students are reading it on their own- and discussing it. We are REALLY into this thrilling book. Not only do we get to discuss zombies in school- but it brings up some great conversations about citizenship, immigration, the FDA, bullying, and our food supply.
- Writing- We have left Narrative writing and have moved into "Bringing NC History to Life" Informational Writing. Last week, we prepared ourselves to write an informational book, chose a topic, and organized our notebooks into chapters. This week we will begin researching and drafting our informational books. The topics that each student chose come directly from our Social Studies standards.
- Social Studies- In Social Studies this week, we will begin to look and examine the North Carolina Constitution and Preamble and discuss the General Assembly.
- Math- As a grade level, we decided that the best thing for all of our students right now is to be taught in our own homerooms using guided math groups and stations. All students will still be learning on their own level, but they will be grouped within our classrooms. Each day students will receive a mini lesson, small group instruction from me, and opportunities to work both with a partner and independently. We will continue in Geometry this week and will be looking more specifically at angles and how to measure angles using a protractor. The standards for our math lessons are below:
4.MD.5 Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:
a. An angle is measured with reference to a circle with its center at the common endpoint of the rays, by considering the fraction of the circular arc between the points where the two rays intersect the circle. An angle that turns through 1/360 of a circle is called a “one-degree angle,” and can be used to measure angles.
b. An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees.
4.MD.6 Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.
