A Look into Lodi Public Schools

May 2025 Edition
Lodi Community:
As we enter June, it’s a natural time to reflect on the past school year and celebrate the many successes and accomplishments we’ve achieved together as a school district.
This year has been particularly meaningful for me, as it marks my first full year serving as superintendent. In this role, I’ve had the privilege of working more closely with our dedicated students, staff, and families across the district. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a caring and committed school community, united in our mission to provide outstanding educational opportunities for all students.
I have always known the Lodi school community to be something special, and this year has only deepened that belief. I’ve enjoyed meeting more members of our community, attending events at all grade levels, and while still finding time to cheer on our high school students as they showcase their talents—on stage, on the athletic field, and in academic competitions.
With so many exciting events packed into these final weeks of the school year, I look forward to attending as many as possible. There’s a unique energy that comes at the end of the year, as students demonstrate how much they’ve learned and grown. I encourage you to join me—whether it’s on the sidelines, in the audience, or at graduation on June 24—as we celebrate our students’ achievements.
To our seniors: enjoy these last few weeks. Your connection to Lodi doesn’t end at graduation. The memories you've made, the lessons you’ve learned, and the impact you’ve had will always make you an important part of the Lodi Public Schools family.
Very truly yours,
Frank D’Amico
National College Decision Day at LHS
National College Decision Day is a major milestone that marks the culmination of years of academic work, personal growth, and planning for the future. To help students commemorate the day, Lodi High School transformed the cafeteria into a celebratory space, complete with college-themed decorations, school pennants, and a lively photo booth with fun props.
To make the day even more meaningful, Lodi invited local New Jersey colleges to attend, including Montclair State, Caldwell, Ramapo, Rutgers-Newark, Felician, Fairleigh Dickinson and Bergen Community. Some schools even brought their mascots, which added excitement and school spirit to the celebration! Seniors sported their college apparel, enjoyed bagels from the guidance department and treats donated by ShopRite, and spent time taking photos and connecting with friends.
In addition, the guidance department hosted breakout sessions where students could meet directly with admissions representatives, either to ask final questions about the colleges they plan to attend or to explore options if they were still undecided.
“What made this event truly special was the collaboration between students, staff, local colleges, and the wider community,” said School Counselor Nicole Dorfman. “The support from teachers and counselors, who contributed advice and participated in the celebration, helped students feel recognized and uplifted. The college reps and mascots brought energy, while the breakout sessions offered real value for students still finalizing their plans. I certainly could not have done any of this without the support and help of our administration, custodians, and school counseling team.”
“This celebration wasn’t just about where students are going, it was about honoring their unique paths, building confidence, and reinforcing that they are supported as they step into the next chapter of their lives,” she added. “It’s one of those days that captures the spirit of what education is all about: guidance, community, and growth.”

The Bergen County Board of Elections has been training 35 Lodi High School students to work the June 10 election. Students who work an 8-hour shift will earn $210 and students who work the entire day will earn $350.

Faculty Spotlight: Laura Leto
Second-grade teacher at Roosevelt School
Mrs. Leto has been teaching in the Lodi School District for 28 years. Currently, she is a second-grade teacher at Roosevelt School. Mrs. Leto even lives in Lodi, settling here after marrying her husband, who grew up in Lodi. She speaks fondly about seeing her students in ShopRite, at the Lodi library, or while they are out trick-or-treating.
“As a student, I always loved school,” said Mrs. Leto. “From the start, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher.”
Mrs. Leto said her favorite thing about teaching is that her life revolves around wonderful people.
“I have been fortunate to work with incredible administrators, staff, students, and families throughout my tenure,” she said. “I am a product not only of my current school family but have benefitted from all of those whom I have worked with in the past.”
Mrs. Leto strives to help students build problem-solving skills and confidence in themselves. “I want the students to believe that they can continually improve and to never give up,” she added.
When asked why Lodi Schools are such a special place, she said: “I feel that the staff’s dedication to their students is what makes our Lodi Schools stand out from others. The teachers are motivated and caring. There is an overall commitment to excellence. Days, weeks, even years from now, students and families will remember what we do for their children.”
Mrs. Leto attended William Paterson University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and English. Mrs. Leto loves the beach and ocean, often spending time at a local pool and on Long Beach Island.
Alumni Spotlight: Nina Russo
Digital Marketing Professional
Nina is a 2014 graduate of Lodi High School and a graduate of the Montclair State Feliciano School of Business.
How did Lodi Public Schools help prepare you for your future?
The wide assortment of extracurricular activities helped me fine-tune skills, like fostering my creativity, that I’d later use to excel in college and build my own business. I participated in drama club, student government, student council, softball, and soccer.
What is your favorite memory from school?
Performing with the 2014 cast of Legally Blonde.
What was your favorite class and why?
Ms. Hophan’s chemistry class. She made learning accessible and fun. I also just enjoyed the combination of math and science.
Who was your favorite teacher/staff member and why?
Louis Bernice, head of the drama club. He went above and beyond to teach students theater arts, no matter their prior experience or knowledge. He encourages kids to be themselves without judgement and gives them autonomy to express themselves on stage and off. I’ve long carried the confidence he instilled in me. Louis also cheered me on as I built my career in social media and even taught me how to use public transit when I was interviewing for my first internship in NYC.
What advice would you give current students to get the most out of their educational experience in the Lodi School District?
Strive to get good grades always, but the most valuable lessons and skills will be learned outside the classrooms. Take every job, meet every person, and tell them your goals. You never know who will be willing to help you.
