The Power of Play
Help your child become more successful in daily life!
Sonora Elementary School is inviting families to aid in students growth by helping to develop their executive function through fun games and activities.
Executive function is a set of mental skills. It includes working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. We use these skills every day to learn, work, and manage daily life. Having trouble with executive function can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions!
Working Memory
Try this fun Repeat it Back game at home to help improve your child's working memory!
Repeat it Back
INTRO: Let's play a game! In this game, we'll be practicing our working memory and attention skills. Working memory is our ability to keep information in our heads. Attention means listening and focusing so we know what's going on.
DIRECTIONS: Say a phrase out loud and have your child try to repeat the phrase back to you using the same words. If more than one child is playing, have them take turns answering.
You can sit at a table for this or in a circle if multiple children are playing. If you're in a circle, it can be fun to toss a ball to whoever has to repeat the phrase. Start with a tongue twister or any phrase. Once everyone has the hang of it, have students think up fun phrases of their own.
Repeat it Back Ideas:
- I saw Susie sitting in a shop.
- A slimy snake slithers down the sand.
- If a dog chews shoes, whose shoes does he choose?
- How much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
- Four fine fresh fish for you.
- Six slippery snails slid slowly.
- I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.
- The wizard winked and waved his hand.
- The hippos heard the hunters and hurried home to hide.
- Three gray geese in the green field grazing.
- How many cookies could a good cook cook?
- She sells seashells on the seashore.
