Port Susan Middle School
Family & Student Update for 11.19.23
We appreciate you
I want to start off by thanking our wonderful PTO. They do so much for our school behind the scenes and go above and beyond. We are very thankful for our partnership and their support. This week, they provided staff with lunch for conferences. It was a great treat!
In addition, we truly appreciate the communication of our families and working together with you to support students. Throughout the year, we encourage you to reach out if you have questions. It is important that we continue to work together for student success.
A reminder that we will have early release this upcoming Wednesday (no late start). I hope you have all had a restful weekend and take time to do something you enjoy.

Boys Basketball
The boys had two basketball games this week against Anacortes and SMS which were exciting to watch. Highlights of the games include the following:
7th Grade JV: On Tuesday, the 7th JV boys basketball team won a thrilling game in overtime against Anacortes, 36-35. Myles led the way in scoring along with Henry and Asher. Great defense by Casey. Honor of the game player goes to Josh, who made a clutch basket and provided solid rebounding. On Wednesday, 7th JV boys basketball played a complete game yesterday on their way to a 27-17 win over Stanwood. Henry led the way in scoring and Jaxson had a stifling defense that kept Stanwood in check. Honor player of the game goes to Alex for his solid rebounding and presence in the game.
7th Grade V: The 7th grade varsity basketball team had 2 games this week. On Wednesday they lost a very competitive game to Anacortes. They were led in scoring by Chayse with 8 points. They played very hard, but lost by 3 points. The honor of the game goes to Levi and Hans for their hard play and team spirit. On Thursday they beat Stanwood Middle School. They were led in scoring by Ethan with 18 points. It was a tough battle against our cross town rivals, but they played hard and worked as a team to get the win. The honor of the game goes to Chayse and Bodi for their hard work on defense and rebounding. Great job all around.
8th Grade JV: The 8th grade JV boys basketball team won an exciting game vs. the Anacortes Hawks by a score of 29-20. The Knights used great team defense to seal the win. Gabe & Joel made some big shots and Miles had some great rebounds. The honor of the game bracelet goes to Dominic for his awesome attitude. Way to go Knights! On Thursday, the 7th and 8th grade JV boys basketball team played a fun back and forth Red/White game. Gabe and Elliott hit several shots to help the Red team get the win. The honor of the game bracelet goes to Eli O for his effort and the great sportsmanship he shows every day.
8 Grade V: Our 8th grade V boys basketball team had a great week of basketball. Their teamwork, sportsmanship, and overall game play was fun to see. On Wednesday, they fought a tough battle against Anacortes Middle School, but fell short of the victory 36-48. They finished off the week with dominating team win over Stanwood Middle School with a 55-21 victory.

Staff Shout Out
In honor of National ESP Day this past week, our staff shout is for two different staff members who often fly under the radar, but make a big difference at PSMS.
Amy Hart, our SSA (School Support Advocate) at both middle schools. Mrs. Hart has been working in social services for about 17 years- most of that time working with youth and families. This is her 4th year in the district, and 3rd year at PSMS. Mrs. Hart's position as the SSA allows her to connect with students and families to offer support to students during school, as well as assistance with connections to community resources. Mrs. Hart loves getting to know all the students and enjoys being able to help out however she can. When she is not at PSMS, Mrs. Hart likes to spend time with family and friends, read, bake, draw/doodle, spend time at the beach, curl up on the couch with a cup of hot tea and a blanket, and travel.
Kim Smelser: PSMS HRO (Health Room Assistant)
1- I have been working at Port Susan since 2020 although I was a substitute all over the district for about five years before that.
2- My favorite thing about working at Port Susan is definitely the wonderful staff. It is such a privilege to have such a supportive group of people that I get to be around everyday.
3- Outside of my time at PSMS I enjoy spending time with my husband and our 3 teenagers. We love the outdoors and going to Disneyland whenever we can. We also have a dog named Jessie and 9 chickens!

To be eligible for these benefits, students must be residents of Camano Island and be between 6th graders through 12th graders who are 17 years old."
