Principal's Message
Dear Baggett Family,
I want to start out by thanking you for riding out the literal storm with us. Who would have expected that four of our January school days would end up digital? Thank you for supporting our efforts during these days at home, ensuring that your students logged on in any way that they could and that they completed their assigned work. As a reminder, because of all of the unexpected digital learning days, the district converted February 7th, this Friday, to a traditional learning day. All students will be attending in-person classes that day.
I also wanted to reach out to you about the noise that exists outside of our four walls. There are so many things that could possibly distract us from the most important work that we do, educating the 1071 students who walk through our door every single day, building community, and working to fulfill our vision to become an innovative STEAM school where students feel a sense of belonging and where they are inspired to become creative, impactful members of society. How do we get there? We do our best to set the distractions and the noise aside, and we continue to focus on that which is most important. I want to thank you for sending your students to school every day. Consistent attendance is critical! Remember that our teachers can only work their magic if our students are present to receive instruction, to collaborate with one another, to express their creativity, and to use their critical thinking skills. We are doing our best every day to insulate ourselves from the distractions of the outside world. We appreciate your support in these efforts as well.
As we enter into February, I want to bring to your attention our next two big events, our musical production, Finding Nemo Kids, funded in part by a grant that Ms. Colwell received from the Disney Corporation and our Black History Month program. Our production of Finding Nemo Kids will take place on Wednesday, February 12th at 6:30 PM in the theater at Discovery High School. Year after year, Ms. Colwell, Ms. Holland, Ms. Sapp, and Ms. Lopez have led groups of over 60 students to put on a wonderful production. I have no doubt that this year will be even better than the last. Don't miss this opportunity to support our students and our incredible arts team! Please see the flyer below for more details.
Black History Month will culminate in a big event on Thursday, February 27th at 5:30 PM right here at Baggett. Last year's event was wonderful with a Historical Wax Museum, where students came alive in character to share about the lives of famous African-Americans. Audience members then congregated in our gym where performances took place, showcasing the talent of our students and others from our community. I have no doubt that this year will be even better, with vendors selling their wares and our community truly immersing ourselves in African-American Culture. Please mark your calendars. You don't want to miss it!
Let's continue to keep the things that are most important, most important. Our children, their safety and security, their growth and development, their education, and our plans for a brighter future.
In Service,
Mitch Green

News from the Media Center
Thank you to all of our families who supported their children over the Winter Holiday Break with our Media Center's Reading Challenge. So many students completed the challenge and each one was awarded a token to receive a free book from the book vending machine. Two lucky students received free tickets to see Dog Man the Movie at the movies!! Please remember that 20 minutes a night, 100 minutes per week is what Baggett Elementary School expects from all students all of the time, not just during the break.
To support this effort, the Media Center is happy to announce that the Scholastic Book Fair is underway. Students will have an opportunity to purchase books throughout the week of February 3rd. The book fair will close on February 7th. All families are welcome to come by the Media Center through the 7th to select books to purchase for your child. Purchasing books supports the gift of reading. Help your child to grow into a successful student by encouraging him/her to read. Surround your child with books from our media center, the local public library where library cards and checking out books are free, and choose to purchase books that they can use to build a personal library at home. Children will return to familiar books often, as they do with movies. Yet, reading will help them to develop a rich vocabulary and will take them to places to experience things that they have never been to before, places both real and imaginary! Do you need help selecting books, please contact us in the media center for personalized assistance based upon your child's preferences and current reading performance. We're happy to help you to give your child the gift of reading!
Even with the snow that came our way, January was a busy month in counseling! Kindergarten and 1st grade learned about expected vs. unexpected behaviors and personal space. 2nd grade spent time building their brains growth mindsets and practicing mindfulness, while 3rd grade learned about identity, prejudice, and empathy to develop connection and understanding. 4th and 5th grade started off the new year thinking about their futures by setting goals and learning about different careers.
Currently, we are running the Palentine's Fundraiser to raise money for the Baggett Counseling Department, so be sure to check it out! Additionally, we would love to involve more of our Baggett Community in our Career Day, so please fill out this form (Career Day Form) if you would like to be a presenter!
