Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
I have been thinking recently about the impact that people have on others. It does not happen through life-changing events and those huge moments in life. Although major events are impactful, it is our day to day actions that provide lasting impact that influences others, including our children. I recently ran across a short, two minute video that really highlights the impact adults have on children in our day to day interactions. I hope you can take 3 minutes to watch this video and then ask yourself the question, βWhat is my impact?β.
Thanks so much for the positive influence you have on others,
Sincerely,
Derild Parsons

IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.

CCHS Wins $5K in Nationwide T-Mobile Friday Night Lights Sweepstakes π
Churchill County High School Athletic Director, Brian Mello, announced on Tuesday, September 3, that CCHS was selected as one of the T-Moblie $5K Fridays Sweepstake winners and they are now eligible to win $25,000, and a grand prize.
Mello entered CCHS into the T-Mobile Sweepstake on August 24. βEd Romero, the Rural Market Manager for T-Mobile, stopped by the high school and told me a little about the sweepstakes. I thought it would be an incredible opportunity for our athletic program and our school community as a whole,β Mello said.
Rural schools were the only schools eligible to enter into the sweepstakes. Mello had to submit two essays, one about what CCHS would do with the money if they won, and another about what Friday night means to the community. Once the essays were submitted and CCHS was approved, the real work began. βWe created a cchs_greenwaveathletics Instagram page and had to create posts that included #FN5GL and #Sweepstakes and tag @TMobile,β Mello said.
Once posted, students, families, and the entire community were encouraged to post their school spirit on Instagram to increase the odds of CCHS winning extra cash as part of what T-Mobile referred to as $5K Fridays. βWhether it was a picture of students posing at a pep rally or cheering at a game, anyone could represent the community and show off their Greenwave spirit. All they had to do was tag cchs_greenwaveathletics, and T-Mobile, and use the hashtags Sweepstakes and FN5GL to ensure each entry was counted,β Mello said.
On Tuesday, September 3rd, Mello received word that CCHS won the $5K Friday Sweepstakes. βI had no doubts that our school and community would prevail. This is a very exciting time for us and I already have some plans for the $5K to better our athletic facilities,β Mello said.
Now that CCHS has been selected as one of the $5K Fridays Sweepstakes winners they are eligible for $25,000, and the grand prize of $100,000, which includes a donation from National Football League Rob Gronkowski for a new or improved weight room. βWinning the $25K or the grand prize would be amazing for our school and Fallon. It would show everyone that this small, rural community can come together and achieve anything. However, without the community's help, it will be hard to win. So we need members of the community to pull through and help us out. Letβs show the world what Fallon can do,β Mello said.
You can help CCHS reach the next milestone as a Top 16 finalist by sharing your best Greenwave moments and tagging @TMobile, @cchs_greenwaveathletics, and using the hashtags #FN5GL and #Sweepstakes on Instagram. Every post made with @TMobile, @cchs_greenwaveathletics, #FN5GL, and #Sweepstakes is another entry for the $25,000 sweepstakes and the grand prize.
βIn my opinion, our high school is the best. Not only do we excel in academics, but also in athletics. Our facilities are already beautiful and I am so proud when we get to host other teams and show off what we have. Winning the next round, and the final round would help elevate our athletic facilities and we could make it something that no one in Rural Nevada has seen at a high school level. Having top-notch facilities makes the entire student body proud to be a member of our school. With the community's help, we can have a venue to be proud of, a venue that makes the entire student body proud to be a Greenwave,β Mello said.
T-Mobile representatives will be at the homecoming game on Friday, September 20, to present CCHS with a check during halftime. They will also have a ton of giveaways for all in attendance including thundersticks, t-shirts, stadium seats, and more. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m.

ACTIVE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AT CCHS
On Thursday, I stopped by the high school to visit classrooms and engage in student learning. I had the opportunity to visit multiple rooms, but particularly enjoyed Ms. Hammondβs Advanced Art Class and Ms. Pimentalβs Welding. Each classroom offered a student lens on learning, with students fully engaged in career-pathway articulation. What made each of these classroomβs unique? Each room highlighted student-led learning initiatives.
Student led learning empowers students to take ownership of their education by encouraging active participation, critical thinking and collaboration with their teacher and peers. In Ms. Hammondβs room, a student was painting a sunset landscape as a gift to his elders at the reservation, while another was painting a CASH ONLY sign for an upcoming school event. In Ms. Pimentalβs welding, students were actively bead welding; a critical component for career assessment and future career opportunities. When asked about bead welding, one of the students exclaimed it was a tedious task of patience and detail, noting the obligation of practice and endurance.
As I was leaving the school, I reflected upon the wondrous opportunities we are extending to our students. ChurchillCSD is truly aligning our work to foster growth, success, and opportunity. What a great experience! Thank you to CCHS for sharing their enthusiasm for learning.
As I was leaving the school, I noticed a parking ticket on my car! Parking ticket?!?! My car was apparently flagged as a βpotential student parking violation.β I have to giggle, as it is good to know I was in the building long enough to be assumed a βstudent.β In all serious consideration, I would love to be a CCHS student. Learning is different nowadays, and I wish learning back then was as engaging as it is now. Thank you CCHS for a great visit!
School Highlights π

Students in Laurianne and Lance Lattinβs Spanish I classes read a story out loud about Batman and a zombie then they had to act it out, draw pictures about it, and write in Spanish what happened. Students also participated in a race to find facts about different countries. The facts were posted in the hallway in Spanish, so students had to figure out which facts went where on their team papers and only one person could go out to find a fact and return to tell it to their teammates.

Coleen Meihack taught her sixth-grade students in her math class math fact skills that will be vital for students to have for their future. I was specifically pleased to see them learning the order of operations. This skill is targeted for algebraic thinking that will be used outside of the classroom. It actually applies in real-life situations and is one of those math skills students will need. Great job sixth graders and great job to Mrs. Meihack. It has been a pleasure to see so much learning happening in our school. Every classroom observation or every pop-in to a classroom is a true testament to the amazing things happening here at CCMS. I am proud of our students, I am proud of our staff, and I am proud to be their leader.

Fifth-grade students in Dominique Johnson and Shannon Matheson's science classes prepared for their first science unit of the year. They took soil samples from around the school last week that will be used in activities related to their unit of the study of soil, rocks, and minerals.

Every year Principal Kimi Melendy goes into each classroom once a month to do an activity with the students. Last week, Melendy started this tradition off for the new school year by going into classrooms and reading the book Our School is a Family to students.
