Hello North Rockland Families:
Happy Halloween!
This exciting week has been full of fun and scary events, pumpkin patches, apple picking, trunk-or-treats, field trips, holiday lessons, honorable ceremonies and even a county title for our boys and girls Cross Country Team! Breaking news-Congrats to our Football team for their playoff victory. They take on defending State Champion Carmel next Friday in the section semi-finals!!!
It’s been great really getting into the swing of things and welcoming back a sense of normalcy to our schools NR Strong and NR Together. I think we all appreciate spooky season, fall sports, extracurriculars and activities more than ever after these last two years of uncertainty.
District Halloween celebrations this year will be unique as the holiday falls on a Monday and students will be participating in school festivities with parades, costume contests, haunted houses, eerie history and science lessons and more. In North Rockland we take part in a wide variety of Halloween activities as long as it’s all good-natured and safe.
We’ve found that our students are excited about Halloween and have come up with ways for all children, even those from cultures and faiths that may not celebrate the holiday, to be able to be included in some way. Whether it be listening to music, connecting with staff, or spending time with their friends at recess we have many engaging ways to build community within their schools planned for Monday.
As part of our school and district-wide commitment to equity, we are focused on community and creating inclusive, welcoming environments for all. Our schools are special because of the people who are a part of them. We support our administrators, educators and staff members who continue to do their best for the students and families that they serve and thank them for all the extra time and efforts put forth to make this week and next so memorable. Special thanks to our principals who give so much to ensure our students, are safe, happy and receive the best possible education. Please join me thanking our wonderful principal team in recognition of National Principals month!
Wishing everyone a fun and safe weekend and Haunted Halloween!

In honor of National Principals Month Superintendent Dr. Kris Felicello partnered with local It's Coffee Barista (who knew our principal's orders by heart) for a cup of joe for each one of our wonderful building leaders as a thank you for all they do for North Rockland Students. After dropping off the “principal fuel” we sat down during their favorite part of their day to talk about what led them to become a building leader. Volley for a Cause
In North Rockland we are blessed that we can always count on our school community to rally together!
Thanks to everyone who came out for 2022 Volley for a Cause volleyball game which was held at NRHS vs. Clarkstown North last week. This year we volleyed for two incredible NR Teachers with life threatening illnesses that have incurred expenses not covered by medical insurance. Your support meant the world to them. Each year the cause is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community NR Strong and NR Together!

PANS/PANDAS is a medical condition that causes an autoimmune encephalopathy, resulting in varying degrees of psychiatric symptoms, learning issues and motor coordination disruptions. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, or PANS-Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. www.pandasnetwork.org. NR has joined forces with local families to participate in the PANDAS Network shoe fundraiser. The fundraiser is to increase awareness and provide support for PANDAS Research. We'll be sharing more details regarding our upcoming "shoe drive" from October 28 thru December 21 soon so stay tuned and save your gently used or new shoes!

Candy
There are several ways to reduce environmental impact (and choose healthier alternatives) on the candy front:
Choose candy in less plastic packaging
Make treats yourself.
Opt for small package free gifts instead of candy.
Save bags and candy buckets to be reused in future years or give away for others to use.
Recycle what you can by checking packaging for recycling instructions.
Decorations and Costumes
By getting crafty you can reduce your environmental impact when it comes to spooky get-ups and decor.
- Decorations - Reuse instead of buying materials for decorations. Some ideas for reuse include: Turn old stockings with runs into spider-webbing, cardboard boxes into tombstones, leaves or branches collected from your yard can be used for decor just about anywhere.
- Make your own Costumes! - Old clothes can be used or repurposed as good pieces or parts of costumes, like worn t-shirts, black pants/shorts, etc. Check out thrift shops, consignment stores and yard sales, instead of buying new.
- Trick-or-Treat Bags - Use (and decorate) household items to collect candy in. A bucket, pillowcase or old even an old bag can be decorated inexpensively at home - and reused year after year.
- Pumpkins and Jack-O-Lanterns - Don't throw away all the goodies from inside your pumpkin. Toast the seeds for tasty treats. Make pumpkin pie or muffins with the fruit - or after using pumpkins as decor you can donate them to local farms or chicken coups for animals to eat. If they've gone bad they can be composted.
Safety
While Halloween is a time for costumes, tricks and treats, please be reminded that activities should be good-natured and not pose real threats to our students, staff or schools. After all, the best Halloween is a safe Halloween. Here's a brief Safety Tips Checklist, drafted in collaboration with NRCSD's new School Resource Officers. (read on to learn more about these dedicated law enforcement officers)
In School Tips for a Great and Safe Halloween Season!
Avoid any sharp or long swords, canes or sticks as a costume accessory. Instead use soft props.
Consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives to masks.
All candy bought, donated or distributed in our schools should be nut-free to ensure our students with allergies are safe.
Make sure that shoes and masks fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or sight impairment.
Practice good hygiene and ensure your hands have been washed before handing out candy.
Safety on the Trick-or-Treat Trail!
Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
Make sure children stay in a group, communicate where they will be going and only go to homes with a porch light on and, ideally, a well-lit pathway.
Never enter a home or car for a treat. Notify law enforcement authorities immediately about any suspicious or unlawful activity.
Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency, become lost or are prone to wander. Carry a cell phone for quick communication.
Safety Tips for Drivers and Candy
Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.
If you don’t have to go out, avoid driving on Halloween.
Have an adult check candy to be sure the wrappings aren't torn or missing and that the treats look safe to eat.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Snow Day Policy ❄️
The New York State Department of Education ruled that School District’s are able to utilize the remote-learning technology implemented during the coronavirus pandemic to allow students to continue their studies on days when the snow is too heavy for them to commute to school. Some Districts across the state have adopted a policy that will eliminates traditional snow days all together, opting for a remote learning day During inclement weather. North Rockland will utilize traditional snow days until the three that are built into our calendar are exhausted. Once all of our traditional snow days have been used the District will utilize the remote option when possible.
Erin's Law ⚖️
As parents and educators, it is important to take the time to talk to our children about personal body safety. New York State passed the Erin Merryn Law, which requires all school districts to implement lessons that teach children about personal body safety. The purpose of this law is to protect children if approached by known or unknown individuals who intend to harm them.
Starting this school year, K-6 social workers will teach two lessons using the, “Play it Safe!” curriculum. These lessons ensure our K-6 students learn vital skills that will keep them safe. Students will learn the 3-part safety rule: Saying No!, Getting Away from Danger as Soon as They Can, and Telling a Trusted Adult.
Students in Grade 7-8 will participate in two grade-appropriate lessons in their health education classes. These lessons will teach them strategies to stay safe. If you want to learn more about Erin’s Law, please click here. Erin's Law Parent Notice.
School Breakfast/Lunch Remain Free in NR 🥪
For the past two years, every student has been eligible for free school meals, regardless of how much their parents made in Rockland County. That program expired at the end of the summer and has created confusion. In North Rockland we are proud to share that all our schools qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our dedicated Food Service Department has worked to get all our schools eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the next four years.
***Each child is entitled to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch meal per day. For additional meals students are encouraged to use My School Bucks.

NR ATHLETICS
Introducing the 2022 Rockland County and League Cross-Country Champions!
North Rockland won the boys and girls team cross-country championship yesterday!
Our boys cross country team smashed records as well! Two freshmen boys bucked the odds to finish 1-2 in a sport in which, at least on the boys' side, upperclassmen traditionally dominate. In fact, with the boys county race being run since 1909, Thursday marked the first varsity win ever by a freshman boy. That runner was Red Raider Claudel Chery, running together with classmate Ryan Tuohy throughout the race, Chery finished first with a time of 16:02.3 with Tuohy on his heels finishing second in 16:03.3.

Raider Rescue 🐾
North Rockland has partner with Hi-Tor Animal Shelter to feature one dog and one cat to help them find a loving home each week. Check out the Shelter Wish List linked here. Red Raiders to the Rescue!!!
Little Kitty 😻
"Little Kitty first came to us back in 2017 after being found on a porch. She was then later
adopted but unfortunately came back to us recently when she was abandoned when the owner
moved. Little Kitty is a very sweet 6 year old cat and just wants a quiet home where she can
sleep and be pet all day. She loves chin and chest rubs. Once she notices you, she immediately
perks up and starts chirping for attention. If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application on our website Hitor.org."
Duke 🐶
"Duke is another one of our amazing dogs here at Hi Tor. He has been here for a little over a year and is a very handsome Labrador/ Pit Bull mix. His coat is a soft tan and his eyes are a hypnotic, crystal, hazel color. He’s a big strong boy but when he takes his stuffed toy on a walk with him you can see the puppy that is still inside. This Sunday, 10/29, Duke will be 4. You can be sure that he will get some very special treats that day and just maybe, 2 of 3 extra walks with his stuffed friends. If you are interested in adopting him please fill out an application on our website Hitor.org."
Last week's adoptable friends can be found linked here.
