Return Reading Olympics Contract
Attention 5th & 6th Grade Families:
Below are dates for the remaining Reading Olympics meetings for this year. All meetings will take place in the library at 8:15 am.

The 6th grade volleyball round robin tournament is coming soon. This year's tournament dates are February 5th, 13th, 21st and 29th.
Parents/Guardians of 6th-Grade students, please view the informational letter and permission form linked here. Mr. Prykowski also sent the letter home with 6th-grade students. The permission form must be retuned to Mr. Prykowski no later than the morning of February 5th.
Join us at Wister's BBQ on Wednesday, February 21st from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm for Dine & Donate, Wister's will donate 20% of our purchases back to Gwynedd Square Home and School.

Dental Hygenie Clinic
The Dental Hygiene Clinic at Montgomery County Community College offers a wide array of preventative and oral health services for adults and children.
The clinic is located in the Health Sciences Center at 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA, and operates September - May; schedules vary by semester. Call 215-641-6483 to request an appointment.

Sealant Saturday
A Children's Dental Sealant Clinic supported by the Dorby Family and TLD Foundation is being held at Montgomery County Community College Saturday, March 2nd 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Complimentary oral examination and dental sealant placement will be provided for children 6 - 14 years of age. Space is limited, please call 215.641.6483.

A Few Fascinating Facts... Did you know?
1.Hip hop dance style originated in the Bronx, New York City during the late 1970s. The first song that popularized hip hop around the world was a 1979 single by The Sugarhill Gang called “Rapper’s Delight. The word hip-hop was invented in 1974 by DJ Africa Bambaataa. Run D.M.C. was the first rap group to be featured on Rolling Stone Magazine and the first rap group to appear on MTV.
2. Blues music was created in the South in the 1860s.
African-Americans created this new form of sound, taking inspiration from both work songs and spirituals. The genre is characterized by call and response patterns. It's the originator of the groove pattern and has many sub-genres such as the Chicago Blues, Country, Delta, West Coast, Electric, and more.
3. The origin of Black music is traced back to slavery. Spirituals were one of the earliest forms of musical expression (1619–1865).
During slavery, enslaved people were forbidden to speak their native languages, as owners feared they would plan and share escape routes or seek revenge and rebel. So to communicate feelings, slaves began singing and creating songs that were passed down to many generations. These songs were referred to as spirituals. There were songs of freedom and survival, influenced by African and religious traditions. Many say that Gospel music is a genre that comes from Spirituals.
4. What do the following artists have in common: Patti LaBelle, Jerry Pickney, Billie Holiday, Chubby Checker, James Dupree and John Coltrane? All were born or grew up in Philadelphia.
