A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good morning, JLS Mustang Families!
We hope that you are enjoying this fantastic Spring Break time with your Mustangs, your families, and your friends! I have spent the entire past week celebrating my parents as they achieved the milestone of 50 years of marriage on March 23. It really has been rewarding to be a part of their experience!
Women's History Month Awesomeness
The week prior to Spring Break saw an incredibly successful finale to our Women's History Month with our spirit week celebration...and we appreciate the terrific participation on the part of our students and staff in such an honorable, empowering, and respectful manner! A huge debt of gratitude to Jennifer Herrin, Samantha Ashley, Beth Suttie, Jeannine Everett, Jennifer Burns, Charlotte Wholters, Devon Yorkshire, Beth Winsor, and our Student Council Association for making this valuable recognition of women historically, now, and forever such an engaging educational experience all month long!
Multicultural Night Magnificence
Our Multicultural Night on Tuesday, March 19 was outstandingly well attended by our school community in support of our Mustang superstar students! We owe Diana Lopez, German Cabezas, Laura Chiang, Shannon Minnick, Jennifer Herrin, Samantha Ashley, Al Young, Jona Masiya, Fungisaya Masiya, JLS Custodial Superstars, Vickie Doyle, Katie Hailey, and ALL JLS Staff who were able to attend our Multicultural Night on Tuesday, March 19 gratitude for an evening of kind togetherness and support of our Mustangs as they brilliantly illuminated who they are with such creativity and love in music, art, food, fashion, and conversation. It was indeed a MAGICAL EVENT as I was promised, filled with moments of greatness as our Mustang kiddos showed up for each other in such a celebratory, caring fashion! SO VERY PROUD!
Fine Arts Spotlight
Our fine arts program continues to shine at JLS! Specifically, a word of congratulations to our 8th Grade Band Students under the leadership of Ms. Beth Paquette for their Assessment Performance over the weekend of March 16-17! Our musicians performed their hearts out, earning recognition for a job well done from all judges! Thank you to Jennifer Maulfair for working with our Drama Club to bring a quality performance of Sleeping Beauty to our Evergreen Mill ES student and staff visitors on Wednesday, March 20!
Our 8th Graders Will Be 9th Graders Soon!
It was also delightful to see many of our Rising 9th Grade Mustangs head over to Loudoun County HS for their introductory event to the world of high school. We heard nothing but positive commentary from LCHS and JLS staff members who supported this great event for our 8th graders about the Honorable, Engaged, Respectful, and Determined qualities that our Mustangs displayed when engaging in this orientation experience. I must admit that seeing them walk the hallways to enter their buses to attend the event made me realize how very proud we are of all of our 8th graders this year and how we shall miss them! Check out information below my welcome message regarding Heritage HS' forthcoming event for Rising 9th graders as well!
Quarter 3 Ends on Thursday, April 4, 2024!
Believe it or not...this coming week marks the End of Quarter 3 and leaves us only one more quarter to go for SY 2023-2024! Please connect with your Mustang at home to review our Grade Level Weekly Academic Updates posted regularly in their Schoology accounts and in this newsletter to ensure we know exactly what is expected for us to close out the quarter.
It is important for your Mustang to connect with our educators if they have any questions or need support to bring this quarter to the best possible closure before heading into the final marking period. We are all always here to support!
The SOLs Are On The Way!
We are also heading into final preparations for our Standards of Learning Assessments at all grade levels at the end of April and into May 2024...so you will see an increase in academic supports and enrichment for our Mustangs coming your way in separate messages from our educators, interventionists, and school leadership. The collective efforts of all of our Mustangs to do their best on SOLs relates directly to our division and school accreditation...and provides invaluably important information to future educators about how to work best with our students to continually improve their academic performance for a promising high school and post-secondary career!
JLS Middle School Tutoring Program Support From Loudoun County and Heritage HS National Honor Societies!
Note below that we have a newly expanded JL Simpson Middle School Tutoring Program Support Services program through the great leadership of the Loudoun County HS and Heritage HS National Honor Societies and our Mustang Staff/University Instructors available to students via a Google Form submission by our Mustangs themselves, their families, or their teachers. Pretty awesome resource, right? :)

Read Across America Road Rally
March is Read Across America Month
Get lost in a book, and find worlds that you never knew existed.
Studies consistently show that the more a student reads, the better they do in school. This is especially true of pleasure reading. At Simpson, we will be celebrating the joys of reading through a school-wide reading road rally. Students will accumulate miles for every book while advisories compete to see who gets across America fastest. The rally will run through the end of May and there will be prizes and mini-contests along the way.
Please encourage your students to participate, and read along with them at home. Ask them about what they are reading and let them know that reading isn’t just good for learning–it’s fun!
Any questions? Contact Ms. Everett at jeannine.everett@lcps.org

Simpson Awarded Grant for Innovative "Integrating Cooking in History" Initiative
Loudoun County, VA (March 8, 2024): The Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA) is delighted to announce that JL Simpson Middle School has been awarded a grant for its project, "Integrating Cooking in History." This innovative initiative will engage students in history through hands-on cooking experiences. Led by history teachers Jennifer Herrin and Christina White, the project aims to create a more engaging and immersive learning environment. Students will prepare meals from various cultures and eras, gaining a deeper understanding of historical contexts through firsthand exploration of food and flavors. The grant from the VMSA will support the purchase of necessary cooking equipment and ingredients for the program. This project aligns with the association's mission to promote innovative and engaging learning experiences in middle schools. "The 'Integrating Cooking in History' initiative truly embodies the spirit of creative and impactful education," said VMSA President, Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. "This project has the potential to transform the way students learn history, fostering a deeper connection to the subject matter while developing valuable life skills." In addition to exploring diverse cultures and historical periods, the project will also emphasize a focus on the historical contributions of women and people of color. By examining the impact specific individuals and groups have had on food and its history, students will gain a more nuanced understanding of the past. About the Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA): The VMSA is a professional organization dedicated to supporting and promoting excellence in middle school education throughout Virginia. The association provides professional development opportunities, resources, and advocacy for educators working with students in grades 6-8.

No Place For Hate at JLS
No Place for Hate Initiative @Simpson Middle School
Simpson Middle School is joining the No Place for Hate initiative!
Created by the Anti-Defamation League, this program provides lessons, activities, and resources which we will uniquely tailor to meet the needs of our school community. Our goal is to facilitate an environment that helps students to be Honorable, Engaged, Respectful, and Determined each and every day. To meet this goal, our objectives include: implementing strategies that promote school unity, encouraging student voice, celebrating diversity, increasing student-leadership opportunities, and encouraging respect for each member of our school community. Students will participate in learning activities via weekly advisory lessons and quarterly events.
The No Place for Hate Initiative uses its pledge as a focus for students and teachers. The program encourages students to make a commitment to uphold each line. Please see below:
Middle/High School Pledge
• I will seek to gain understanding of those who are different from me.
• I will speak out against prejudice and discrimination.
• I will reach out to support those who are targets of hate.
• I will promote respect for people and help foster a prejudice-free school.
• I believe that one person can make a difference—no person can be an “innocent” bystander when it comes to opposing hate.
• I recognize that respecting individual dignity and promoting intergroup harmony are the
responsibilities of all students.
Escuela Secundaria y Preparatoria
Please be on the lookout for further information about our efforts with No Place For Hate at Simpson! We look forward to your support, as always, as our Mustang Community!

How it works:

Have gone above and beyond in a situation
Have inspired others or have a heartwarming story
Are doing something unique or creative that is leading to results
In general, ANY great news!
Complete the submission form (It’s short and easy!)
The Employee Recognition office notifies the nominee as well as their supervisor of the submission
The story may be placed on the Employee Recognition webpage.
We are honored to announce that Ms. Victoria Curtis-Meyding, Mr. Derrick Jackson, and Ms. Alesha Whitmore have already been recognized by families in our community! You can find their stories on the SHINE webpage under Inspirational Stories.
Our goal is to place a spotlight on the hundreds of positive interactions taking place in LCPS each day...and especially at JLS! We look forward to seeing your celebrations of our JLS Mustang Professionals throughout 2023-2024!
