NORTH TEXAS QUILT FESTIVAL 2023
This year's show was a great success. It was much more crowded than last year. We had several ribbon winning quilts from our members! Preliminary numbers show that our guild made over $2000. (Final numbers will be available after the ‘EXPO’ closes everything out and sends the guilds our percentages.)
We need a couple of volunteers to represent our guild for next year’s show. There are notes and spreadsheets from this year to make the job easier. The main job is to be the FWQG liaison.
Meetings usually start in January or February. You would go to NTQF board meetings (some in person, some zoom), take guild information to those meetings and bring back info from the meetings. A little show ‘cheerleading’ is helpful. Lynda McGee, this year's show coodrinator, will likely be at most meetings as the ‘set up’ coordinator. Please consider helping.
Thank you again to EVERYONE who entered quilts, bought tickets and t-shirts, made items for the booth, volunteered (before, during and after) and came to the event.
And remember, next year’s show will be the first week in August, so start on those show winning quilts NOW!

BEES
FRAYED KNOTS
TIGHT KNOTS BEE
The August meeting of the Tight Knots Bee was hosted by Barbara Hughes. Members present
were Barbara Anderson, Carolyn Hughes, Judi Janes, Barbara Hughes, Grace Stroud, Pat
Wagers, Cheri Bigham, Chris Tomich and Peggie Herring. Ceci Villa had a family emergency
and Patty Ford decided not to brave the heat! Smart girl. It is brutal right now.
As usual, our first conversation was a health check around the circle. Two decades ago, we
formed our little bee and some of us are showing a little wear and tear. But we are putting
up a good fight!
Show ‘N’ Tell:
- Barbara H. showed a ginormous blue, yellow and white quilt made for her own bed.
This was followed by a bed topper made from quilt scraps. She will cover her quilt
with the topper to protect it when her dogs get on the bed.
- Cheri showed some Big Stars she is experimenting with. Also, she showed a NICU
quilt.
- Peggie tried cooling us off by showing us a Christmas table runner.
- Grace completed a large paper-pieced Cardinal. She purchased the kit at last year’s
quilt show and plans to donate the wall hanging to J.T. Stevens Elementary. Grace
was the librarian at JTS for 13 years and her grandson Asa is completing his 7 th year as
a student at JTS. Of course, the JTS mascot is a Cardinal.
Barbara served delicious homemade pound cake for an afternoon treat. Peggie, Grace, and
Judi were presented with their birthday fabrics. What a treat to get 5 yards of fabric (color of
your choice) on your birthday. Ceci won Right-Left-Center in absentia. The fat quarters were
geometric prints.
Note: Approximately 75 pairs of children’s socks have been collected by Tight Knots and
have been delivered to Safe Haven.

Start a Bee
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- 7-9 members. Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
QUILTS OF VALOR
This hot summer weather has kept a lot of us indoors. Hopefully you have taken advantage of it and gotten some sewing done. What better way to spend a hot day, than staying in and sewing with friends.
We will have more block kits ready to pick up at the September meeting. If you have some ready to turn in, please bring them to the meeting. We still have a couple of quilt kits out, also.
I had the pleasure of awarding one of our quilts to Korean War veteran William Covington on Saturday, September 2 nd . He is 92 years old and recovering from a fall, so his ceremony was held
in his living room. He and his wife were so pleased with his QOV. His quilt was made with friendship stars and floating stars, set on point. The Covington’s wanted the members ofthe Guild to know just how much they appreciate all that we do for veterans.
If you would like to nominate a family member or friend who has been touched by war, please go to the QOVF.org website and fill out the form. We would love to award several at our November meeting
Just a reminder: Recommended size for QOV’s 60”x80” (minimum:55”x65”; maximum: 72”x90”)
Thanks again for all of your hard work!!
