Veterans Day 2022

All of the Duneland Schools honored veterans this past week, either in person or with a visual tribute, or both. The district would like to share these events and tributes with our entire school community. It is always important to honor our veterans for their service to our country.

All 10 schools in the Duneland School district are designated as Purple Star schools by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). The Purple Star designation is awarded for a school's significant display of commitment to service members, veterans, students and families connected to our nation’s military.

Bailly Elementary School hosted a school-wide Veterans Day program on Friday, November 11. Veterans (parent or sibling of a Bailly student) were invited to attend the program that featured student artwork, essays that were read during the program, and other activities.

Brummitt Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day Program at the school. Prior to the program, the third grade class served a pancake breakfast in the school’s cafeteria for the veterans who are Brummitt friends and family. This was a great opportunity for the students to learn to serve others, especially veterans.

Jackson Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day Program for veterans who were family members of Jackson students. The school’s program included the Cub Scouts posting the colors, fourth grade students reading essays, and the video posted below honoring Veterans.

Liberty Elementary had two programs; one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-4. Veterans were encouraged to attend the program featuring students singing songs, a flag presentation from the Boy/Girl Scouts, and speakers. Their program was also streamed live on Liberty's PTO Facebook.

Yost Elementary second graders hosted the school's veterans day program. Due to construction and lack of parking, the school limited its guests to 2nd grade families.

Liberty Intermediate School hosted a Veterans Day Program on Thursday, Nov. 10 for LIS families and veterans. Students in the performing arts honored veterans by singing songs and playing an assortment of patriotic tunes. The winners of the annual essay and poetry contest read their creative writings at the event.

Westchester Intermediate 5th and 6th grade Social Studies classes made cards for deployed Veterans this year. Due to construction, WIS created a video presentation with pictures of their veterans submitted by WIS families. The WIS Choir sang two songs "America, The Beautiful," by Samuel A Ward, and "To Those Who Serve," by Jill Gallina. The video was featured on the WIS website and played on the morning announcements for the students on Friday.

Chesterton Middle School hosted its 55th annual Veterans Day community recognition program on Friday, Nov. 11 in the CMS Goldsborough Gym. The program featured music from the choir, band and orchestra; posting of the colors by the Boys Scouts and speakers

Donation to Folds of Honor: Chesterton Middle School raised over $1215 to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that provides educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. CMS Principal Mike Hamacher, right, presented the donation to Folds of Honor representative Chris Logan, left, at the program.

To honor CHS veterans on Veterans Day, many CHS Student Government members stayed after school to work on posters and candy mugs to give to each Veteran who works at CHS. Also, a special all-school announcement was read, including the reading of the names of CHS faculty and staff members who are veterans. Immediately following, "Taps" was played and an extended moment of silence.

TVA created a virtual veterans day program that was posted on Canvas, Facebook and shared with families via a special newsletter. This program included a dedication of TVA’s wall of heroes display finalizing the TVA's Purple Star school process.
