NWMS Weekly Parent Update
October 21-25
It's a Great Day to be a Viking!
Reminders and Updates
Good afternoon,
It is indeed a great time to be a NWMS Viking - thanks to our community, Ms. Cline, was able to drive two carloads of donations to Ashe County Middle School on Friday morning! The principal at Ashe County Middle School shared the following text message:
I just need to tell you that I’ve sat in a room and read through those cards and I’m crying my eyes out. What a kind, wonderful group of students you have. Thank you so much for leading such an incredible group of kids. I look forward to talking with you soon! Have a wonderful weekend! Ms. Hines, Principal, Ashe County Middle School.
We will continue to accept donations for this school and in particular two members of the school community who lost their homes. The details for one these students include:
He is a size medium in men's for shirts/hoodies/sweatpants. A size 18 in boys for jeans. He is a size 9 in shoes and likes Nike stuff, north face, hooey but he will be happy with anything. He loves anything to do with PlayStation. He is mostly into clothes and PlayStation.
The principal will share more about the other student that also lost his home and we will share that information with everyone. Thank you for your kindness and for your donations. We are also still collecting warm clothing, basic school supplies and backpacks for the school as well.
This week at Northwest Guilford Middle School we recognize Red Ribbon Week. Our School Social Worker, Ms. Baker, has put together ideas for us to recognize this week and ways for us to send a message across our community to stay Drug Free. Please see the details in the calendar information below. We encourage everyone to participate!
Finally, this week we are happy to share last week several members of our school's music department were selected into All County Orchestra! Also, this past Saturday, our talented ITS students showcased their skills at the NC JR State Theatre Festival, delivering standout performances and bringing home impressive honors.
Let's make it a great week,
Mrs. Francisco

Sales Tax Referendum on the Ballot
A sales tax referendum is on the ballot this year. The Sales Tax Referendum is for Teachers and Frontline Workers. Did you know, the current teacher salary supplement in Guilford County is, on average, 35% lower than that in peer counties? The proposed sales tax won't apply to groceries, gas, or prescriptions. What is the impact of the referendum? If it passes, a $20 pizza would cost an additional 5 cents in tax to support our local public schools. Guilford County Commissioners have made a commitment to education and a vote this November (or during Early Voting) could mean higher pay for GCS teachers and frontline workers.
Early voting started last week. You do not need to vote at your designated site to cast a ballot. Visit www.gcsnc.com/salestax to learn more about this tax referendum and to find polling locations near you.

Need a new One Card?
Homeroom and WIN Teachers - please review this information with your groups (it is also being sent to parents on Sunday):
Parents, we are making things easier for your student to purchase new ONE cards. We now will take money every morning in the Main Office, rather than just the two days a week. In addition, if you don’t mind paying a convenience fee, you may purchase a new card using your student’s K12 payment account. We will receive a record of the purchase, but you are welcome to notify us once you have paid the fee, if you prefer. The cost of a new One Card is $5.00. As a reminder, all students are expected to wear a One Card each day so if your child has lost or damaged their card we will need them to purchase a new one.
Lost and Found
Please review the photos below for Lost items. These will be donated to a WNC Ashe County Middle School by Friday, 10/25 if they are not claimed.
