SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
January 20, 2025
Welcome to Spring Semester!
We hope all of our Met families enjoyed their Winter Break and we look forward to welcoming you back to school for Spring Semester!
Start of Spring Semester - IMPORTANT DATES!
Please read the following carefully so you are aware of when students should and should not be attending classes during the first two weeks of school:
- Tuesday, Jan. 21, is an internship day. Students who are continuing their current internships or have finalized a new internship for Semester 2 should plan to attend their internship on Jan. 21 per their designated schedule.
- Students who do not have an internship should work on their internship search from home. Students do not attend school on Jan. 21 because Met staff will be having professional development in the morning. Advisors will reach out to their students regarding expectations and support for internship search.
- Wednesday, Jan. 22, is the first day of Met classes for ALL students, starting at 8:30 AM, with classes continuing every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday thereafter (except for designated holidays).
- Thursday, Jan. 23, is the first day of internship support classes for any students who do not have a Semester 2 internship lined up. If your student does not have an internship, they are REQUIRED to attend school on all Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:30, beginning on Jan. 23, to work with their advisors on finding an internship (except on dates that are designated otherwise).
- Tuesday, Jan. 28 - Met staff are having professional development in the morning, and students should not attend school. Students may connect with their advisors via preferred communication methods (e.g., call, text, email) in the afternoon for internship search support.
Updated Academic Calendar
The Academic Calendar (linked here) has been updated slightly to reflect the expanded Spring Exhibition schedule, which will be similar to the one from the Fall (i.e., Exhibitions during the last two weeks of the semester). There is also a small change to the date of the May School Picnic MetUp, which will be on May 23.
Celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr Day, the Met, as well as all district schools and offices, will be closed on Monday, January 20. Please refer to this website for some educational resources that can be used with your students at home.
Met Staff Updates
This month, we welcome Mihoko Ikeuchi to the Met! Mihoko joins us as our new Administrative Assistant, and brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge that she will use to support every member of our community. You will likely see Mihoko the next time you come to the Met front office, and one of her goals is to get to know every Met family, so please take the opportunity to introduce yourself and welcome her to the Met!
Carolyn Dumas, our prior Interim Administrative Assistant, will stay on in a clerical support role and help with onboarding Mihoko, as well as continuing to support our school operations.
We bid farewell to Anne Armstrong, who has realized her goal of transferring to ALBA Community Day School. We have slightly restructured our site schedule to ensure we are providing coverage for Anne's advisory and other classes, and we are moving forward with our hiring process to bring in a new teacher. We thank Anne for her years of service to the Met.
Mesa College Classes
Intersession classes began on Monday, January 6th, and end Friday, January 31st. The spring semester at Mesa College will begin on Monday, February 3rd, and end on Friday, June 2nd. To view their course schedule, students can log into their Mesa Student Portal (mySDCCD).
Please encourage your student to confirm their enrollment and review their class schedule prior to the start of the semester. Some students have short term (12-week or 8-week) courses. In these cases, students must be aware of start and end dates so that they do not miss the start of the classes.
Additionally, students should regularly check their Mesa College email account for any important updates and communications regarding their upcoming classes.
If your student has any questions or requires assistance, feel free to reach out to Mr. Moravec. For more information on procedures and updates, students can refer to the Met/Mesa College Students Google Classroom.
Met Foundation News!
The Met Foundation is looking for a volunteer to audit its financial records as well as a few new board members for the 25-26 school year. We are a small group that meets every other month so the time commitment is low! If interested, please contact Lindsay Speaker at lindsayspeaker@gmail.com or 832-427-2286. The following positions will be open:
Vice President - parliamentarian in charge of the bylaws and assists the president with events such as Back to School Night and Met Monday.
Secretary - sends out meeting notices with minutes to be approved, takes minutes at meetings, handles correspondence such as thank you letters to donors.
Treasurer - receives, deposits, and pays out all funds, presents a report at meetings, files taxes and other government required forms such as the charity registration.
Auditor - completes an audit of the records at the end of the school year and presents the audit at the July meeting.
Our next Foundation meeting is Monday, Jan. 27, 5pm.
Class of 2025
Financial Aid and Scholarships!
It’s time for our senior students and families to apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are now open.
Our Senior Advisors and Mr. Moravec have already assisted students with setting up their FSA ID for the FAFSA application. Parents/Guardians will also need to create their own FSA ID in order to help complete the application for their student. For more information and support, please visit this site and use this application link to access the FAFSA application.
No matter what pathway your student is pursuing, there is financial aid available to help. We strongly encourage all families to apply for financial aid, regardless of income. Completing the FAFSA or CADAA is a requirement for many higher education institutions, especially if your student is seeking merit-based scholarships. Additionally, submitting the FAFSA or CADAA is necessary to be considered for the California Promise Grant at California Community Colleges.
Deadlines for FAFSA or CADAA:
- For 4-Year Universities: The state priority deadline is March 3, 2025.
- For Community Colleges: The deadline is September 2, 2025.
Scholarship Opportunities: Mr. Moravec regularly posts scholarship search links and information for seniors in the Class of 2025 College and Postsecondary Info Google Classroom (Class Code: b44kgvq). Check the top post for the latest links. Don’t miss out on these important opportunities to support your student’s future!
