Brown School Buzz
December 20, 2022
Dear Families,
We have been able to accomplish great things since our return to normalcy at the Brown School!
Our kids are back into the swing of things and working hard to meet their learning goals. The teachers have completed all of their data meetings for Reading and Math and have a good handle on how students are progressing. I am so impressed with the work and development that the teams have put into making sure they understand every child's learning needs and how to provide instruction to meet their needs. Report cards have been completed and we held a Community Meeting this week!Though we are working hard to. meet students' learning goals, as we approach the holiday break, we are also managing to sneak in a little fun as well.
Please read on for reminders, dates, Principal Ava's column, Community Meeting pics and video and everyone's favorite topic, head lice:-)
Being Good Neighbors
Marblehead neighborhoods and parking can be difficult to navigate at times, however, we'd like to remind everyone about the importance of being good neighbors when traveling to and from school, and at pick up/drop off times.
- Please travel slowly on the neighborhood streets. The traffic on Carol Road has been reported as a bit too fast during the morning arrival time.
- Please be mindful not to block our neighbors' driveways
- Please do not park on the corner of Carol and Jane Roads. When a vehicle is parked too close to the corner, the buses are unable to make the turn. (I actually just learned that the law is 20' from the corner.) Thanks for your help with this one.
- Please travel slowly in our parking lot, and be sure to stop at the stop signs. The glare of the morning sun can make it challenging to spot the pedestrians.
Thank you for helping to keep us all safe and for helping us be good neighbors.

A Few Words from Principal Ava!
I started my day with balloons and presents from Friends ladies. Then they took some pictures. I helped with the morning announcements, then I visited Mrs. Hecht’s, Mrs. Machado’s, and my class which is Mrs. Janock’s class. I also went to a preschool class and PE to observe. In all the classes, I noticed that some of the kids were talking, but most were listening to the teacher. Then I got to go to PE with my class. After PE, I walked to Widger Road with Ms. Max to meet my boss, Mr. Robideau. Mr. Robideau reviewed my observations(and gave me candy!). When we came back, I worked on this newsletter, had lunch in my office with a friend and helped a teacher. Then I had recess with third grade, and then I finished my day with Ms. Max. My recommendation for Brown School is to have more math! I had a great day!
Got Lice?
Head lice is one of those things will always be an uninvited and unwanted childhood menace. No family ever wants it, and I think we all agree it can be both a nuisance and costly to manage. If it is discovered that a student in school has lice, parents are notified and are asked to provide treatment at home as soon as possible. Parents are also encouraged to continue regular checking to make sure the treatment is working. Long ago, students were sent home when having head lice. This has not been the case for decades. Head lice do not transmit any disease and therefore are not considered a health hazard, so students may be at school with lice. We also do not notify other parents when a student has lice. If lice is running rampant, we would send notifications to all parents. With 445 students at the Brown School, we have not found our reported cases to be alarming.
Earlier in the fall, we did have some cases of confirmed lice. Those parents were notified (or they notified us). We understand the rumor mill can gain traction with a topic such as lice. The total number of students with lice earlier in the fall was fewer than 10. Last week we had 2 reported cases in our school, and this week we have 0 reported cases. While families typically let us know when a child has lice, it's always possible there are unreported cases. With that said, it is sometimes difficult to tease out the rumors from reported cases. Here's how you can help:
- Do regular head checks at home-CLICK HERE TO SEE HOW
- Do not share hats, scarves, combs, brushed, hair ties. etc..
- Please notify our school nurse if your child has head lice so we can have accurate numbers and keep you posted on any serious outbreaks
- Learn more. CLICK HERE for all the facts on head lice from the CDC.
Thanks for helping us keep lice at a minimum at the Brown School.

Joy, Peace, and Light
As we inch closer and closer to Dec. 22, when we get to experience just a tiny bit more light each day, I hope you all are able to enjoy some time to reconnect as families. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, the solstice, or just a break from the monotony, I wish you all joy, peace and light. I thank you for your continued support as we work together to raise our Brown School kiddos as thoughtful, kind and curious children. Happy Holidays!
