Principal's Message:
To the East Elementary community:
We're entering the final push! We will be testing next week for our final MCAS session of the year (Gr 5 Science and Technology). Once that is complete we begin shifting to end-of-year events and celebrations. Please be sure to check our calendar on our website as well as the events listed here and the PTO emails.
We will be holding our annual bike/walk day on May 22nd. Officer McGillicuddy, HPD, and our wonderful crossing guards will be out in force and able to help in the areas surrounding East.
Lastly, a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have been here on Fridays for Get Smart About Art. Our students LOVE this program and we're grateful to all of those helping to coordinate or volunteer their time to spend with our students!

Universal SEL Screening
A reminder that the Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS): Social-Emotional screening will be taking place this month. The purpose of this screening is to identify students that may need additional social-emotional support on a Tier 2 level as a way to support positive outcomes for all learners. The Student Risk Screening Scale-Internalizing and Externalizing (SRSS-IE) is completed by the classroom teacher who will rate students on 12 items. Families will be contacted after each screening if your student’s rating indicates a need for support. At that time, you have the option of moving forward with the recommendations or the option of not utilizing them. Additionally, you have the option of opting out of the screening altogether. If you wish to do this, please contact Lauren McClain at lmcclain@hinghamschools.org by Monday 5/20

Kindergarten Screening
Kindergarten Screening will take place for East families on May 21st. We will be reaching out soon to those who have provided registration packets to set up screening appointments for that day. Our screening team (comprised of educators and service providers) will meet with students, administer short screening assessments, and observations of play.
Parents should be prepared to drop their student off for approximately an hour-long appointment.
Juneteenth Art Submissions
In 2024, the national theme for Black History Month was “African Americans and the Arts,” intended to highlight the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. As part of the celebration of Juneteenth in Hingham this year, the Hingham Unity Council is inviting all students in grades Pre K-12 who live and/or attend school on the South Shore to share their views on the theme: What does the rich cultural legacy of Black Americans mean to me and/or my community? Students are invited to express or reflect on this through a work of visual or performance art, an essay or other written work. Students may submit an essay, poem, a piece of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture – any medium of expression is welcome!), a video or original song or other performance to the Juneteenth committee by Friday, May 31, 2024.
