The Incredible Resiliency of Our Students

A friend recently shared the quote above with me. After three weeks of virtual learning with Patrick Henry students, and after five weeks of working with Patrick Henry staff, I am more convinced than ever that no one can stop us when we are determined to learn. The amazing attitudes of our staff and students to learn, challenge, try, stretch, and push has made me believe that we can and will succeed this quarter while we are in an entirely new era of education. Our students have met the challenges of virtual learning head on and have picked up more technology skills in the last three weeks than we teachers had to learn throughout the course of our entire education. The most beautiful thing is that these are lifelong skills that will transfer to future career paths, opening the door for our students to be the most technologically advanced generation to ever graduate from Patrick Henry. The possibilities for their future are endless, and I'm so proud of them for working tirelessly in this new phase of learning. Take a look below for some of the highlights from this week!

Highlight on Related Arts

Pictured above, Damiya and her sister Ja'Nayla are seen completing their warm-up stretches for P.E. class with Ms. Blake. If you have ever wondered if virtual Related Arts was possible, you just have to stop by one of our art, music, or P.E. classes to see the fun! We know that all three of these subject areas are vital for our students' social, emotional, academic, and physical well-being. We had to make sure there was room for each class in our students' schedules, and we are so glad that we did! Take a look at the websites below to find out why art, music, and P.E. are so important to us, and take a look at some of the cool things our students are accomplishing with Mrs. Terrance, Mrs. Bryant, and Ms. Blake!

Dance, Dance, Dance

Kerion couldn't help himself after his afternoon warm-up - he just had to keep it moving and he danced his way into P.E. class!

Blank Canvas

Our art students got to create their own version of the drawing shown by Mrs. Bryant by using their blank canvases at home and their art supplies!

Video Instruction

Even during an in-person art class, watching someone create a beautiful piece of artwork can not only inspire you to make your own, but it can also help you with some of the mechanics. In the virtual world, we use video lessons to help our students get the visual impact of how to draw and paint.

Nearpod

Using a new tool known as Nearpod as a teaching tool for music, Mrs. Terrance took her students through a learning activity with an extra listener on board. Hi Gus!

Welcome, Ms. Von Behren!

Ms. Kerry Von Behren (pictured in the bottom right corner) is our new building sub who has taken on so many different roles this school year even in just the past few weeks. Here, our fourth and fifth graders worked with her in Ms. Williams' absence to continue their learning!

Virtual Math

I caught Ms. Ivory's third graders using YouTube as a teaching resource during a math lesson. I was so engaged that I had to find out what happened in this problem!

Headphones!

Thank you to our community partner, HomeWorks!, who provided headphones for our students so that they could really focus during a lesson. Not only does it allow the student to focus, it also gives the rest of their family a break from the sounds of the classroom that are coming through their iPads!

Staff Learning

Our teachers are constantly learning. Pictured here in the first staff meeting of the year, Patrick Henry staff stayed online for an extra 90 minutes to learn from Microsoft Teams expert, Mr. Dave Wright, who took the time to train us all the way from Seattle!

St. Louis Science

Ms. Williams' class got started in a new science curriculum this week, where they not only explored science in the virtual world, but they also explored science in St. Louis! The new curriculum will combine amazing experiences in places like the Arch, City Museum, and Busch Stadium to keep science lessons fun and engaging.

Professional Learning Communities

Each grade level meets weekly throughout the school year with Ms. Amber Smith, our Academic Instructional Coach. This week, Ms. Smith held her first round of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to begin data analysis and teacher support!
Dr. Rogers happened to be in the right place at the right time to snag an adorable moment between Mrs. Wildermuth and her son, Charles, our former prek student! We miss you but it's fun to see you even while you're learning in your own classroom!
Thanks to Ms. Shanice Webb, our new Family and Community Specialist, for leading our Title I meeting with our staff and parents on Thursday. It was awesome to hear about what we are doing here at Patrick Henry and how parents can get involved!
