South Auckland Middle School

Today is Project 7 hand-in day. That means we are half-way through with the term and the end of the school year is just a month away! But before we dream of holidays and festive dinners, the students will have to hurdle Project 8 first. All the best to our students for the final four weeks ahead!

During all of Week 6, the Year 10 students will be going on their long-awaited camp trip to the Far North. They will be heading up to Russell (the first capital of New Zealand) and staying at one of the most amazing and pristine campsites available, Bay Light. It will be an eager return to Russell for the Year 10's since they were in Year 7. They will be experiencing more of what Russell has to offer.

All the girls will leave on Monday, 16 November. The boys will be on their way there on Wednesday, 18 November, just as the girls are making their way back to Auckland. There will be experienced staff members (including Matua Mark and Mrs. K) travelling with the Year 10’s and some awesome activities in store.

PhotoLife has sent us the unique access codes for each student and they should be bringing the codes home with them today. The code will allow you to view the photos online and to make orders for the photos that you like.

Go to their online ordering page, type and the code and your email address to access the photos. If you experience any issues, please visit the Photolife website and contact them directly for support.

Emma Purves (from class 2017) was the 2020 recipient of the Mana Maori award at Ormiston Senior College's Year 13 Prize-giving last Wednesday night. Emma was a student leader during her final year at SAMS.

She has been active with the Kapa Haka group that performs at school powhiri and inter-villa events as well as other cultural activities at Ormiston. The success and achievement of OSC's top student is celebrated through the Mana Maori award. Congratulations, Emma!

SAMS' super staff member of the week is Karen Middlebrook. Karen is an English teacher at Rata villa. She has settled into the job nicely on her first year at SAMS. Karen is passionate about the students' learning and employs a variety of strategies to help the students achieve their goals.

Swimming classes are ongoing every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre on Sykes Road for all of Term 4. Classes that will be swimming are:

• Wednesdays: Y8 Manuka and Y10 Rata
• Thursdays: Y10 Totara and Year 10 Manuka

Swimming is a core subject at SAMS and contributes greatly to our student's overall development. Because of this, swimming is compulsory.

Please remind your children to bring their swim wear/togs and towels on their swimming days. They can also bring goggles but these are not compulsory.

If you have any concerns regarding your child participating in swimming class, please contact us immediately.

Drop-off's and pick-up's are at the Elim Chapel parking lot please.

It is important to remember that children are constantly crossing the road and driveways, so please observe the 15kph speed limit when inside the Elim property. Our tamariki (children) are what is most important.

If it is raining please supply your child a rain coat or umbrella so they don't get wet.

StarJam's End of Year Concert is an event not to be missed! It's the culmination of a year's worth of hard work and fun, and a chance to celebrate the spectacular talent of our Jammers. It features more than 170 Jammers from across Auckland.

When: Saturday14th November, 5.30pm (doors open at 5pm)

Where: Victory Convention Centre, 98 Beaumont Street, Freeman's Bay Auckland

The Great Manurewa Christmas Festival consists of two great events:

• 28 Nov: family fun & Santa parade from 10:30am
  
• 5 Dec: Southmall fun day starting at 10:30am

Where: Manurewa Town Centre, 185-201 Great South Road, Manurewa, Auckland

There will be a Santa Parade at Coronation Road, Mangere Bridge on Thursday, the 3rd of December. The festivities will open at 4:30pm and the Parade will start at 6pm. Lots of games and food will be in store as well as a photo opp with Santa!
