Principal's Newsletter
Spicewood Elementary
October 18, 2024
Hello Spicewood Families,
Thank you all for another busy week at Spicewood. We had well over 200 visitors on campus today to cheer on our students at the Marathon Kids Kickoff! The weather could not have been better for this event!
I also wanted to thank your Spicewood Night Lights Committee led by Kristen Riddell and Amy Sawvell. They were instrumental in the planning for our pep rally, parade, shirts, and all the fun Westwood connection events. It was wonderful to see our Spicewood families taking over the streets to cheer us on during the parade. It has been a busy few weeks but so good!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Melanie Solis

A Note about Student Personal Devices 📴⌚
If your child brings a cell phone or smart watch to school with them, it must remain turned off and inside their backpack during the school day.
Here is what is written in the RRISD Student Handbook regarding this topic:
Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones, and Other Electronic Devices
The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes. The use of cell phones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event. If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The principal will determine whether to return the item to the student at the end of the day or to contact the parents/guardian to pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office for a fee of $15. In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal telecommunications device may be searched by authorized personnel. Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

Outdoor Learning with Fall Planting!
Beets, carrots, radishes, oh my! Our Spicewood students have planted thousands of vegetable seeds in our school garden these past two days (along with some wildflowers). We love our time outdoors, especially when the temperatures are cool. Our goal is to just show up and learn! The more you grow, the more you know. 😊🌱
UIL Opportunity
Did you know that Spicewood is the reigning UIL Champions for the Westwood Learning Community?
We are looking for interested students to help us defend our title at the UIL meet on February 1st.
There are available events for students in grades 2nd-5th. If your child is interested in participating, they must commit to 6 practices and to be available if chosen to compete at the meet on February 1st. Practice dates and times will be shared to the group after sign ups.
Students may join up to 2 events as long as the events are not in conflict time slots at the meet. Below is the schedule to check for overlapping events.
If your child would like to participate, please fill out this Google Form by our deadline of October 28th. This is a hard deadline so our coaches can prepare information for teams to begin practice.
Before signing up, it is important that your child is interested in the selected event and will be a willing participant!
Red Ribbon Week October 28th- October 31st
During RRW students will explore and celebrate making healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and hearts. There will be mini lessons on Broadcast each day with prompts for a short discussion/activity, and students (and staff!) will celebrate healthy living by dressing in a different theme each day.
Red Ribbon Spirit Days:
Monday: DREAM of healthy choices! Wear pajamas
Tuesday: We are a healthy COMMUNITY! Wear Spicewood spirit wear
Wednesday: Being healthy is NO SWEAT! Wear sweats or active wear
Thursday: Making healthy choices builds CHARACTER! Dress up as your favorite book character and bring the book if you have it
Friday: No school

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia is often viewed solely through the lens of its challenges, but it also comes with unique strengths. This infographic highlights both the strengths and challenges of individuals with dyslexia, helping to create a balanced understanding. By recognizing these traits, we can better support our children’s learning and celebrate their distinctive abilities.
Science Fair
The Science Fair team has created a website with lots of helpful information about participating in the Science Fair. There is a deadline of December 18th, to register your project.
Last year we had an amazing turnout with over 100 projects! It is always so amazing to see our students interests and thoughts come to life through their projects!
