The seasonal time change often brings with it a time to reflect on the past few months. As we enter the last two weeks of the first trimester, we look forward to the continued academic and social growth of our students. We are so proud of the work our students are doing each day, and how they continue to demonstrate the qualities listed in our portrait of a graduate. We are also thankful for our Washburne staff who had the opportunity this past Tuesday to participate in their own professional learning around our RULER program, Project Based Learning, and a number of other topics.

We have been fortunate so far this fall in regards to the temperature, we know that cold temperatures are just around the corner. Please remember that students are allowed to enter the building at 8:20 AM each day unless there is extreme, severe weather. Students should be dressed appropriately for cold weather.

This Friday, November 11th from 9:00-10:00am please join the Skokie and Washburne administrators in the Washburne Cafeteria for our next, “Coffee and Conversation with the Principals”. Please enter via the Washbunre main office for this event. We look forward to seeing you this Friday.

We also wanted to bring your attention to an event our PTO is hosting for our 7th grade students this Friday after school:

7th Grade Weekend Warmup

Please have your 7th grader join us for a fun afternoon of music, friends, food and fun!

• What: A Friday after school hour of fun, weekend warmup, chance to celebrate another week of school with friends and snacks.

Washburne is collecting extra halloween candy to benefit Lurie Children’s Holiday Wish List. If you would like to donate extra Halloween candy, we have a bin in the main office. Students or parents can bring in donations through November 9th.

Carleton Washburne School will be conducting our annual lockdown drill in conjunction with the Winnetka Police Department on Tuesday, November 15th. Illinois law requires that all schools conduct a drill with law enforcement within the first 90 school days of the year. Prior to the drill, Washburne teachers will be discussing it with students to ensure that they understand that it is a planned drill and to know what actions to take.

Illinois law allows for parents to opt out of the drill with written notice to their child’s school. If you would like to opt your child out of the drill, please indicate so using this form. You do not need to take any action if your child will participate in the drill.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

This past Wednesday, November 2nd, Washburne held an all school assembly to help students learn more about Text-For-Help. Andy Duran, the CEO of LEAD Coalition, spoke to our students to help them understand what this resource is and how it could potentially be helpful for them or a friend in need. Text-For-Help is an anonymous helpline that our students have access to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that is staffed by licensed social workers. Students can reach out for a variety of mental health reasons to get help for themselves or a friend. While we know that students have access to many trusted adults both in and out of school, this resource can be used at any time of day, especially when students do not have access to other people who could help them.

In order to use this resource, students just need to text D36Help to 844-823-5323. This information can be found on the back of our students’ ID cards.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

7th grade Spanish students are exploring their first novel of the year. The novel is entirely in Spanish, so students have the opportunity to improve their vocabularies and reading comprehension during this unit. The novel, Tumba, introduces students to Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican tradition in early November. Thus, students have done interactive readings and gallery walks about Día de los muertos and have enjoyed acting out scenes from the novel (pictured below).

8th grade Spanish students are diving into Bolivian culture by reading El ekeko. Students are learning about La Paz from the protagonist as well as from researching Bolivian geography and traditions, such as the festival of Alasitas. Throughout the novel, students are reviewing vocabulary through interactive games, acting out scenes with classmates, and reflecting on the plot in writing. It is exciting to watch the kids' oral and written proficiency improve every day!

Art club is new and is open to all Washburne students.

This club will provide materials and individual guidance for 7th and 8th grade students who have an interest in art and have projects they want to work on. Come with your ideas!

Registration begins Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Class will take place on Wednesdays beginning 11/30 - 5/24 from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in the Art Room C302.

Students can attend any & all of the Tues./Weds./Thurs. sessions, depending on their own schedule! Participating students will receive 3 hours a week in the fitness room, providing an opportunity to workout, while being supervised by a certified KW teacher. All students are welcome to join us as we set goals, work on personal training habits, and establish a routine for lifetime fitness.

The 2022 Downsized Capital Improvement Plan: Referendum, was adopted as a resolution by the School Board on August 16th and will be on the ballot Tuesday, November 8th.

Registration for incoming Kindergarteners and students new to The Winnetka Public Schools in 2023-2024 opens on November 16, 2022. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2023, are eligible to enroll. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
