Social Media & Human Trafficking
Threats, Risks, and Vulnerabilities for K-12 students
Jointly presented by WSP and NEWESD 101
Join Detective Sergeant Dan McDonald (Washington State Patrol) and Steve Schreiner (NEWESD 101) to learn how to better protect your students from online dangers.
Det. Sgt. McDonald, a member of the Missing and Exploited Children Task Force and the Human Trafficking Task Force-East, will discuss human trafficking risks faced by students throughout Eastern Washington. He’ll explain recent investigations and arrests, specifically addressing how regional coaches, church leaders, foster parents, and others have allegedly used social media to target school-aged victims.
Mr. Schreiner, who regularly leads internet safety and digital citizenship training for NEWESD-area schools, will provide an overview of the risks students take by posting private information online. He’ll demonstrate how digital footprints can persist forever and explain why students need to safeguard their personal details when communicating online.
