Know Your Rights
We encourage all families to familiarize themselves with their rights. We do have some resources available in case you are interested. All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home.
Where does Extera stand?
1. Keep students, families and staff safe
2. Keep the learning environment inclusive and affirming, and minimize disruptions to learning
3. Uphold our social justice mission and practices
4. Be a responsible and ethical community partner for the East Los Angeles/ Boyle Heights community
We are NOT here to assist or support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in their investigations.
What other steps can I take?
We highly recommend that all families review their emergency contact information, and make sure that if there are others that can pick up their child to get them updated as soon as possible.
If there are other needs your family is facing at the moment, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school for support.
What Can Families do at Home?
What if they come to the school?
We are not required to provide information to ICE unless they provide us with a federal warrant.
Extera Public Schools have a closed campus policy and the gates will continue to remain locked during school hours, both before and after school. Here are the steps that all staff have been trained to follow:
- ICE will not be let into the building, and our Executive Director will be contacted immediately.
- Staff are also aware that they are to inform administration immediately if they see ICE outside of the school or attempting to enter the school.
- Again, we are unable to provide information about students without a federal warrant. If there is one provided, we will take steps to verify the information.
We will communicate with the community if we observe ICE activity around the school and make an alternative plan for pick-up, if necessary.
- Make sure information about their family's status is kept private when possible
- Remember:
- There are many in Los Angeles who voted for the current administration and who are supportive of the current ICE initiatives.
- Students often have a tendency to overshare information with others
- Be cautious with who you share information with. Speak to your child about this as well
- Remember to be mindful of what is shared with families or others via text, email, or social media
