Week 24
Thank you for the outpouring of support in the past week as we've mourned the losses that our community has experienced. We've seen a great deal of compassion, generosity, kindness and caring from our staff, student body and greater ACSD community and for that we are incredibly grateful.
Thanks for your continued support and take good care.
Best,
Michaela

From The MYP Coordinators
In all 8th grade science classes, students are investigating energy efficiency in homes, an ever important topic in today’s world of global warming and climate change. Students are testing the % mass change of an ice cube placed inside a tiny house and under a heat lamp, simulating a hot summer day. They are responsible for designing most aspects of the investigation including choosing an independent variable to test, ensuring all other variables are controlled, and building two small, insulated houses. This project is based on the global Ice Box Challenge and is a favorite among 8th graders every year. Prizes will be awarded for lowest % mass change of the ice cube after ten minutes, most controlled experiment, and most creative house design. Two guest speakers, Dwight DeCoster from Champlain Valley Weatherization Services and Peter Schneider from VEIC, presented information about the design and weatherization of homes in Vermont and practical tips for building and insulating tiny houses using cheap and recycled materials.
Thank you to Ms. Wood, Mr. Montague, and our guest speakers for making the real-world impacts of science accessible, engaging, and relevant for our students!
