Dean's Note
Why is Disney World the happiest place on earth? One of the major reasons is that the cast members, as they call their employees, make their patrons feel special as soon as they step foot on the Disney property. How are they able to do this consistently? “When everyone matters and everyone knows he or she matters, employees are happy to come to work, and they’re eager to give you their energy, creativity, and loyalty” (Cockerell, 2008, p. 35). What would happen if we were intentional about making everyone in our circle feel genuinely included? Inclusion is not just about respecting the differences among people. It is about making individuals feel important and intentionally pulling them in to engage them in our activities. Every individual is important. If you don’t think so, imagine doing your job without them. Let’s create magic!

CHSI Partnerships Provide Free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic
The effort for a fully vaccinated population to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has been a struggle, but the Center for Health and Social Issues (CHSI) has partnered with the Department of Public Health and the Community Organization Relief Effort (CORE) to promote vaccination in Baldwin County. Tanner Cobb, a senior public health major, and intern for the Center for Health and Social Issues, oversees a free vaccination clinic on September 15th at the Collins P. Lee Center in the community of Harrisburg.
The Middle Georgia Food Bank brings a mobile food pantry to the Collins P. Lee center for food distribution every third Wednesday of the month and attracts families throughout Baldwin. Cobb will coordinate the free vaccination clinic where Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be administered to promote vaccination throughout the county. By doing this, the CHSI and partners are attempting to reduce disparities and barriers in the communities of Milledgeville. One major barrier to the community is the lack of transport, so the community center will be more accessible for those without transportation because it is within walking distance for many residents.
This health clinic will be overseen by CHSI director Dr. Damian Francis. GC Nursing students will also attend this event to provide blood pressure and HbA1c screenings to community members and supervised by Dr. Talecia Warren. Everyone who has not been vaccinated is encouraged to come on down to the community center on September 15th from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM to receive their vaccine for free!

Gold-AACN White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony is designed as a rite of passage to emphasize the importance of compassionate patient care at the very start of training. In addition to reciting the oath, students come forward during the ceremony to be “cloaked” before family and friends in the iconic white coat that signifies their status as healthcare professionals.
The White Coat Ceremony was initiated in 1993 at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Arnold P. Gold, MD, a Columbia professor, believed that the oath to compassionate patient care taken by new physicians at the end of medical school came too late. Today, nearly every medical school in the United States, hundreds of nursing schools, and many other institutions participate in this tradition of humanistic care.
The Gold Foundation is honored to have supported this White Coat Ceremony with a grant generously given by Board trustee Elaine Adler and administered through a partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
Dr. Arnold P. Gold
1925-2018
Arnold Perlman Gold was a world-renowned pediatric neurologist, a professor at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons for 58 years, and a master diagnostician who became an international leader and advocate for humanism in healthcare. He died on January 28, 2018, in New York City at the age of 92. His legacy lives on in the work of the Gold Foundation.
