A letter from our leader Janice
It is Finished
When you shake your quilt all the mistakes fall off.
Kelly Cline said, “Sewing is not the same as quilting.” She enjoys 15 minutes of sewing before she goes to her long arm to quilt. Do you separate sewing from quilting?
I have been quilting a project on my mid-arm machine. I wish I were sewing. I am using acrylic rulers to guide the ruler foot. This is a technique that I rarely use in quilting. My circles are not circular. My parallel lines are not parallel and my ‘make-up as you go’ pattern requires multiple ripped stitches. I have to divide the time I spend on quilting into small segments just to finish the quilting. I am looking forward to binding the project. My takeaway is 60+ years of sewing versus 4+ years of quilting. Recently, while looking for inspiration, I stumbled across the saying. “When you shake your quilt all the mistakes fall off.” I knew the “galloping horse test” for a quilt, but since I don’t have access to a horse, I think I will go shake my quilt.
Keep sewing,
Janice

Improving your hand jobs - tips and techniques
Since we’re all at various levels when it comes to hand stitching, learn, refresh or improve your hand embroidery skills with tips and techniques from Bee members. Some of the experienced stitchers in Bee Artful are ready to share! Each month you can come with a sampler of some kind (cloth, hoop, needles, floss, and/or Perle cotton (see photo for a sampler idea) and learn some new stitches.
Critique Documents for reference
https://www.janedunnewold.com/resources/critiques
One is a checklist that can be used as a guideline when looking at a quilt - this is published on her website as part of her creative strength training class.
The second is a detailed essay she wrote concerning the process.
I hope that these documents will help the Bee Artful group conduct critique sessions that are productive.
Letter from the editor
I am one of those that did not finish the projects we began in August and am working on it so that it will be finished by the November retreat. I am looking forward to planning our retreat in October and then attending the retreat in November. I am constantly amazed at the creativity, camaraderie, and willingness to try new artful things with this group. As I have said before, planning a workshop or program for this group is no easy feat as you are all so experienced and knowledgable. Thank you so much for your willingness to try the Japanese approach to creating fiber art.
I am happy to convey all of these wonderful "goings on" via this newsletter. Try to get things to me in advance of the end of the month via email (mandmoliver@gmail.com) or text. If you put the word "newsletter" somewhere in the message line I will be able to find it easier (if using email). See you soon.
