Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
We are getting excited for our FARM Science Assembly that is coming up the week of January 29th. Here is a special message from our PTA . . . .
Calling all volunteers! The FARM Science Assembly is coming to Angell on Mon. 1/29, Tues. 1/30, and Wed. 1/31 and we need your help in order to make it happen!
Each grade level will gain a different hands-on experience in their mobile learning lab. We are asked to provide a parent volunteer for the morning and afternoon sessions on each of these days.
The sign up below includes which classes are attending the field trip during each half day session. However, you may sign up for any half day session that fits your schedule regardless of which class your child is in.
Thank you in advance for donating your time to make experiences like this possible!*Please only sign up if you have already submitted your volunteer paperwork and have been approved.
We are excited to gather with our Family Circles again. Students will learn about famous Black Americans who were the first to pave the way for others in their community. This is a great way for us to prepare for many learning opportunities during Black History Month.
I also wanted you to know that we have rescheduled our Kindergarten Information Night to Monday, January 29th at 6:30pm in the Angell Media Center. Please feel free to pass this information onto neighbors and friends who have children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2024.
We have also rescheduled our Kids Heart Challenge assemblies to Tuesday, January 23rd. The cold days required a lot of patience and flexibility for all of us.
Also, please be advised that our K-5th grade classes are scheduled to complete our winter NWEA assessments in math and reading this week. Most of our testing sessions are scheduled in the morning so please try to minimize any appointments. However, we recognize that some appointments are unavoidable. We will schedule make-ups, as needed.
One last note . . . . .GO LIONS! To all of our faithful Lions fans I am hoping for a great outcome.
Also included in the Principal's Post this week is:
- PTA Updates
- PTA Angell Excellence Focus Group Inquiry
- Winter Gear Drive
- Kindergarten Information Night
- Upcoming Events

Angell Elementary School of Excellence Focus Group Interest Form
The Angell Elementary School PTA knows that a strong partnership among our families, school leaders and community members is important to the success of our students and school. That’s why we are participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program, which grows partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of all students.
We need your help! As part of the process outlined by National PTA, we are in the early stages of our goal for this school year. We plan to add an additional piece of equipment to our playground.
If you or your Angell student would like to participate in our focus group that will aid in determining what type of equipment we purchase, please fill out the following form. This focus group will likely take place before our February PTA meeting at 6 pm. If we have a large number of students interested, their meeting will take place during the school day.
Does this sound like a PTA program you’d really like to help with? Join us! Our next meeting is February 6th at 7 pm in the Angell Media Center. You can also email us at angellberkleypta@gmail.com with questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we work toward becoming a National PTA School of Excellence!

Kindergarten Information Night
Kindergarten Information for All: Information Nights, Registration and Schools of Choice
While it might be hard to believe, it’s time to start thinking about Kindergarten for Fall 2024. In the Berkley School District, Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten information nights, enrollment and the Schools of Choice application windows happen in January and February each year. Starting early allows the District to plan staffing, class sizes and support for students before the year ends. If you have an incoming Kindergarten student this is important information to save. If you know someone who has a child who will be five years old by September 1, 2024, please share this information with them!
Kindergarten Information Nights
Learn about the kindergarten curriculum, how to prepare for the big first day, enrollment options, and Kindergarten/Transitional Kindergarten readiness. All TK and Kindergarten students need to be five years old by September 1, 2024.
During the evening, families will be able to ask the Principal questions, learn more about each school and hear about the #BerkleyDifference. You do not have to be a resident to attend the Kindergarten Information Nights, they are open to all who are interested in the Berkley School District. Learn more about Kindergarten enrollment and readiness by visiting our Enrollment webpage.

Kindergarten Registration for Berkley School District Residents
Berkley School District resident registration for both Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten begins February 5 and runs through February 16, 2024. Registration takes place entirely online, including the required document uploads. Visit the enrollment webpage to begin your registration, verify your residency through our District boundaries document and see what paperwork you need to upload to complete your registration. We can’t wait to meet our new students!
Schools of Choice Window for TK-Grade 5
The Berkley School District Board of Education has approved limited Schools of Choice (Section 105) openings (up to 150 slots) in Kindergarten through 5th grade for Oakland County residents for the 2024-25 school year. Those who are interested in attending the Berkley School District, but who do not live within District boundaries may apply.
Important Schools of Choice details include:
Schools of Choice application period is February 12 - March 1, 2024
Completed applications must be submitted online
No applications will be accepted after the deadline of 5:00 pm, March 1, 2024
Applicants will receive email notification of their student's Schools of Choice status mid to late April following the lottery
On the application, families will select which school they’d prefer to attend: Angell, Burton, Norup, Pattengill or Rogers
For current Schools of Choice families, if you have an incoming TK or Kindergarten student, please be sure to fill out this year’s application as well. Priority is given to siblings.

Cold Weather Notice
As we enter into winter months we will experience some colder weather which will impact our students. We will invite students inside for an inside line-up no earlier than 7:45 am whenever the temperature is 9 degrees or less with the windchill. We have an organized system that allows students to line up in the hallways. However, if the weather is above 9 degrees (factoring in the windchill) we will have students wait outdoors each morning and go outside for recess each day. Please have your children dress appropriately for the weather in the event we do remain outside. Proper winter attire may include winter coats, gloves, hats, snow pants and boots. Although we have some extras in the office we do not have enough to outfit each child.
If you need any assistance with winter clothing please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly as we are fortunate to have anonymous donors who have provided funds and winter clothing to help our Angell families during the winter months.
