The Weekly Update #4
December 4th, 2023
September 26, 2024
E-Learning Day Friday, September 27
The National Weather Service is forecasting severe weather associated with Hurricane Helene, including high confidence in the potential for heavy rainfall and wind gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour, for the midlands area beginning Thursday, September 26, 2024, and continuing until Friday, September 27, 2024. As a result, all Lexington-Richland School District Five schools and offices, including our virtual FIVE program, will observe an e-learning day on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Teachers will post assignments to Google Classroom by 10:00 a.m. for asynchronous learning. If a teacher does not utilize Google Classroom, they will notify parents and students of how this information will be shared. Asynchronous learning involves students completing assignments independently at their own pace throughout the day. Teachers will continue to support students during asynchronous learning by providing feedback, responding to questions, and reviewing assignments when in-person learning resumes. All students will have up to five (5) school days to complete assignments.
District officials will continue to monitor the impacts of Hurricane Helene to our area. Any further announcements will be made using the district’s automated communications system, the district website, and social media.
This is a reminder that students are not allowed to go to the parking lot or leave school during the day without permission. Your safety is our priority. During lunch, students should be in the cafeteria or The Commons area. Consequences for not following this rule may include suspension. Parents, please revisit this information with your students. Our partnership with you is crucial in keeping our students safe and where they should be.

James Otis Scholars
Mrs. Kelly Eckstrom is proud to announce that nine of our Dutch Fork High School students were selected as James Otis Scholars and attended the prestigious James Lecture Series on Constitution Day, Thursday, September 20. The event, organized by the American Board of Trial Advocates, featured a powerful keynote address by Federal Judge Joe Anderson. Judge Anderson spoke passionately about the importance of civic pride and our duty to serve on juries, reminding us of the sacrifices made during the Revolutionary War and at the Alamo to protect these vital rights. Our students actively participated, asking thoughtful questions during the Q&A session, demonstrating their commitment to civic engagement and critical thinking.
Congratulations to our outstanding students:
1. Daniel Leuthner-Barrineau
2. Cleo Floyd-Johnstone
3. Cameron Gary
4. Thomas McKinney
5. Krupa Patel
6. Nishant Shah
7. Leo Sun
8. Skye Veil
9. Khary Vinson
We are so proud of your achievements and dedication!
The Bigham-Grant-Dixon Scholarship
Each year, in honor of the Matriarchs of his family, Dr. Michael-Wayne Bigham Varnadore (Dr. Vee) awards a scholarship to the students who take and pass the AP Environmental Science exam, thus earning college credit.
This year, Dr. Vee awarded several thousand dollars to his students. Pictured are just a few of the students who received a scholarship (those who allowed their images to be used in other words.) Another vast majority of scholarship awardees are already in college to whom Dr. Vee mailed certified checks.
When asked "why" Dr. Vee said: "It's my way of paying it forward and hopefully one day my students will do the same! I have been truly blessed in my life, and if and when I can, I pass the blessing on."
This year Dr. Vee hopes to double the blessings ...
