Hello scientists!
During our three day week this week, students completed a pre-assessment for our new unit, Rock Transformation! A reading on rock types introduced students to the different categories of rocks and how they are formed, and we ended the week with our first Term 2 Roots quiz and a video from geologist Evan Green, who answered questions submitted by students.
Next week students will learn to classify rocks using a dichotomous key-if your student has an interesting rock they would like to classify, they can bring it in for that day! Please label any rocks your student brings in so they don’t get absorbed accidentally into my collection! They will also begin learning about the rock cycle through some labs that will illustrate igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition.
Root words for next week are:
*petro, petri = stone (think: petrified, petrol)
manu =hand (think: manuscript, manual)
Last week students learned about the history of colonization in Sub-Sahara Africa so that they can better understand the African Diaspora. After defining both, students began to look at case studies from the African Diaspora.
This week students will continue to look at case studies from the diaspora. By the end of the week, they will identify how people of African Descent, contribute to the African Diaspora through a formative assessment.

Friday – reading RTHMC pages 257-276 (finishing the novel!)

This is my 6th year at Deal and 10th year teaching math. At Deal we focus on becoming better each and everyday; better self, better are reading and writing for math, and better at showing work. My main goal for this year is to improve your conceptual understanding in math so that it helps you for all your academic life. We learn many interesting topics and have fun doing so.
