QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“It took me quite a long time to develop a voice and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.”
–Madeleine Albright,
A Note from the Principal
When I was in middle school my dream was to be Secretary of State. Looking back now, and knowing that I was in middle school in the early 70s, I am surprised at my untarnished optimism. We had just completed a classroom simulation of international diplomacy to avoid World War I in my history class, and I felt as though I had found my calling, not even hesitating for a moment to think that it would not be possible. By the time I reached my senior year of high school, I went so far as to apply to all of the top diplomacy schools in the country, optimistic about my future career until my dreams came face to face with the reality of being a girl and the first generation in my family to go to college. It was rare to find a woman leader in the diplomatic field let alone one without connections. Like so many young women in my generation, I lost my voice and my sense of purpose in the absence of visible role models and mentors and without the intentional coaching and encouragement.
Almost 7 years later I stumbled on an oasis, what I now understand was an affinity group of sorts. The Program for Women and Politics and Government, then at Boston College and now at U Mass, created a place where young women were provided with mentors and created those connections that are critical pathways to leadership roles. Most importantly the program nurtured voices. I found my voice there and my pathway to leadership.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month I am so very proud to lift up the words of the person who did in fact overcome the many barriers silencing young women to become our nation’s first Secretary of State. Despite the many gains in the past few decades since I was in middle school, it is still as urgent to intentionally create opportunities for our young women to raise their voices with the confidence that the world around them still seems at times so committed to tear down.
