Biddeford Primary School News
September 18, 2024
From the Desk of Margaret Pitts
The beginning of the school year is full of excitement, new opportunities, and the promise of growth for both students and families, and we are off to a great start! Our afternoon drop-off and pick-up routines have found their footing. During drop-off, we are asking that parents pull all the way up in the drop-off lane and have students ready to exit the vehicle; this allows our process to move more quickly. In addition, your patience is very much appreciated during morning drop off. We have a lot of staff in the drop off lane and and students exiting vehicles. Please refrain from trying to pass vehicles, as this can present a significant safety concern. We are grateful to our Transportation Department for their hard work ensuring our students get home safely and our schedule stays on track.
Our school store is now open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students should check in with their homeroom teacher before purchasing from the store. Students need to be on time to be able to visit the store.
I wanted to take a moment to emphasize the critical importance of regular school attendance and on-time arrival for your child's academic success and overall well-being. Even once-monthly absences have an impact on student outcomes. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most beneficial ways that parents and caregivers can bolster the work that happens in our classrooms. Community building and learning begin right when your child walks into their classroom. Students are considered tardy after 8:00 a.m.
Here’s to a successful and fulfilling school year!
Warmest regards,
Mrs. Pitts
BPS Principal

Talking Points
Somedays
As part of the guidance and resiliency programs, Someday lessons will start in each classroom in September. Students will choose something they would like to see happen at school, and we work collaboratively with school stakeholders and the community to make it happen. Come back to this section next month to see photos of students on their "Someday"!
BPS Backpack Program
Each year BPS participates in the backpack program, which is designed to help families ensure their children have nutritious food over the weekends when school meals are not available. Each Friday, participating students receive a bag filled with easy-to-prepare food items to support them through the weekend. This program is completely free and available to all families in need.
If you're interested in signing up or would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact our School Counselor, Jen Schauber at 207-282-8285 or jschauber@biddefordschools.me. We're here to support our community and ensure that every child has access to the food they need.
Grandparents' Day
Join the BPS Parent Council – Your Voice Matters!
Dear BPS Families,
As we embark on an exciting new school year at BPS, we would like to extend a warm invitation for you to join the BPS Parent Council. This is a wonderful opportunity to become actively involved in our school community and to collaborate with fellow parents, teachers, and school administrators to support and enhance our children's educational experience.
The Parent Council plays a crucial role in organizing events and voicing parent perspectives on various school initiatives. Your participation and insights would be incredibly valuable in helping us create a nurturing and enriching environment for our students.
Your involvement early on will help shape our initiatives to best meet the needs of our youngest learners. Whether you have a little time to spare or are ready to dive in with both feet, there’s a place for you on the council!
If you’re interested in joining or would like to learn more about the Parent Council, please reach out to Assistant Principal Nate Molleur at nmolleur@biddefordschools.me or attend our next meeting on October 9th at 5pm at BPS. We look forward to working together to make this school year exceptional for our children. Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to see you soon!
Influenza (Flu) Clinic
We are partnering with Northern Light Home Care & Hospice to provide flu clinics to our students this year. Please click on Biddeford Primary School and complete the consent form. The flu clinic will be held on Thursday, September 26 from 7:30 am to 10:00 am.
Parents must type something into all highlighted fields, so please use NA if it doesn’t apply. Although the vaccine is provided at no charge, there is a cost to administer the vaccine. We appreciate it if you included accurate insurance information. Children presenting with an incomplete form will not receive their vaccine. There is no out-of-pocket cost; those without insurance will be vaccinated with the appropriate form completed. All clinics will have injectable vaccines. In addition, FluMist (nasal spray) may be available at some clinics. We cannot guarantee it for all clinics. Unless you clearly mark which type of vaccine you prefer, and there is no contraindication to either type of vaccine, the nurse at the clinic will determine which type of vaccine to use for your child.

* NEW * House System
We are thrilled to announce that we are implementing a house system this year! House systems have proven track records of creating positive school climates and cultures that are embraced by students, staff, and families, and we want to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students to BPS!
A key element of houses is the ability to increase students' motivation to succeed in school by fostering a sense of belonging among all students and staff. Parents often report feeling more connected to the school community as well. Each student will be placed in one of five houses and will participate in house-specific events throughout the year (families are welcome to participate in some too!). Additionally, during the school year, students will have opportunities to receive Tiger Tickets for their houses. These awards are for going beyond expectations in areas such as academic achievement, character, and uplifting others. When students work together to earn awards for their houses, they celebrate, support, and encourage one another to achieve excellence.
At BPS, we want our students to look forward to coming to school each day. Together, we will create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Within the houses, you'll find a supportive network of housemates, teachers, and mentors who are dedicated to your students' growth and success.
Coffee with the Counselor
My name is Jen Schauber and I'm the School Counselor! Each month I teach students at BPS about different social-emotional skills and character traits. This month we are learning about feelings and emotional regulation— what it means, why it’s important, and how to figure out what our feelings are trying to tell us. Learning happens best when it’s done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help your child continue to learn about feelings and emotional regulation through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it. We will have a lot of fun exploring this topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much! So grab a cup of coffee and read on.
