Have you applied/reapplied for Free and Reduced Priced Meals?
Free or reduced-price meals are available to students based on household size and income. If income falls below the amount listed below for household size, then students living within the household may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students are automatically eligible for free meals if the family receives assistance under the Food Supplement Program or Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) benefits.
Changes and/or status changes occur every year. This year there will be a price category change as of October 11, 2023. Please be sure to apply or reapply in the event your price category is affected by this change.

Attendance
Please note we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann, Dr. Fryson and Mrs. Virgil.

ABSENT NOTE SUBMISSION: Please complete this form within three (3) days once your child returns to instruction. Excused absences cannot be placed into SchoolMax until AFTER the child returns to instruction. Family vacations and trips are not considered excused absences. Refer to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for further clarification regarding excused and unexcused absences.

Nurse Updates
Nurse Ann and the School Health Services strongly recommend wearing a mask and keeping one available in your child's backpack.
Please help yourself and others -- keep your scholars home when they are not well.
Immunizations
Immunizations must be up-to-date and received by the school nurse to prevent exclusion from school.
Medication forms are attached. Please hand carry newly prescribed medication in the pharmacy packaging. Any adult may deliver the medication to the nurse. (appointments must be made)

Join us for FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT in the cafeteria on Wednesday, May 29, right after the MAY PTO IN PERSON MEETING!
We will host the Maryland Science Center at CMITNES. They will bring 9 exciting science stations that you and your scholar can visit to conduct hands-on experiments.

Kind Kindergarten News!
Hello Kindergarten Families:
ELA: We will continue to work on our short and long vowel sounds. We will review how to tell a story, using nouns, verbs, and adjectives, along with the correct punctuation at the end of a sentence.
Social Studies:We are reviewing a topic of things from the past vs the present times.
Math: We will continue to work on addition, subtraction, we will count by 1’s and 10’s to 120, and practice with place value to prepare for first grade.
Science: We will be reviewing planting using different types of beans and watch them grow.

Over the next couple of weeks; we will be completing our spring state testing.
It is very important that your scholars are present in school and on time, unless they are not feeling well.
Our kindergarten promotion ceremony will be on Thursday, June 6, 2024.
Ms. Thornton and Ms. Shulman’s classes will begin at 8:30 a.m. and Ms. Lewis and Ms. Major’s classes will begin at 11:30 a.m. All scholars will receive three tickets, we are unable to provide more than three tickets per scholar due to the limited space.
*Friendly reminder: If your scholar is sick,or not feeling well, please keep them home. They should not be in school with a fever,a constant runny nose, or a cough that disrupts their ability to focus and concentrate on their lessons.

Fascinating First Grade News!
Hello First Grade Families:
First grade had a wonderful time review fractions and enjoying their pizza party last week!
This week we continue our testing and events for the week. Starting on Monday, students will have the opportunity to view and purchase books from the book fair. Teachers will reach out to share which day their class is going to purchase books.
As the weather gets warmer, please continue to bring your scholar with their reusable water bottle.

Spectacular Second Grade News!
Next week in ELA, we will continue Unit 5, Our Incredible Earth. Our spelling pattern for the week is aw, au, and augh, and al words. In Math, we will begin topic 14. In Science, we will continue topic 6, Habitats. In Social Studies, we will continue Chapter 6, Our American Culture. As always, please ensure your scholar reads every night.

Terrific Third Grade News!
This week in Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 7: Celebrating Our Communities.
This week in Math, we are learning about how to find perimeter. Scholars are also learning the attributes of polygons to help with finding the perimeter of various shapes.
In Science, we are finishing up our unit on adaptations, now we're learning about how organisms adapt to changes in their environment.

Fourth Grade
Weekly News!
We will be taking the final administration of MAP in Reading & Math. It is imperative that students are putting their best foot forward and demonstrating what they have learned this year in fourth grade. Students will be taking Math on Tuesday & Reading on Wednesday.
Please check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's progress in their classes. Grades are updated weekly and this is a great conversation starter with your scholar on what is going well and what needs to be improved to continue to have a successful year.

Kings Dominion field trip will take place this Friday, May 17, 2024 at 8:00 am. Thank you for making this a successful STEM event!
MAP Testing
MAP testing will begin next week on Tuesday, May 21-22, 2024. We will start with Math testing and then conclude on Wednesday with reading testing. Please be on time to school and make sure you are well rested. This is the time to truly shine and get the best score yet! Congratulations on making it this far! Well done.
Muffins with Moms & Matriarchs
Muffins with Moms will take place on Tuesday, May 23rd in person from 8:15 am-- 9:30 am. Please make sure you (participants) sign-up for this event as soon as possible. We want to make sure each participant is recognized and honored. Thank you for supporting our scholars!

RELA
Scholars will finish "Delivering Justice" with their weekly progress check, and migrate to "Ezekiel Johnson goes West". They will study the reading skills of "making inferences" and "explaining the author's purpose".
Science
This week in Science we are describing the outer planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They will identify common characteristics of the outer planets and recognize that there are moons, asteroids, and comets in our solar system.
Math
This week in math, students will review multiplication of decimals.
Social Studies
Scholars will be discussing Independence for Texas and California. Have a great week!

Greetings,
Tigers have studio time this week. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to plan and work on their projects. Projects include portraits, still life, architecture, and other activities that develop their understanding of shapes and value in 3D images. We will continue to stress planning and craftsmanship.

Keyboarding: Cursor, Arrows, and Tab
In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners will receive direct instruction and practice with keyboarding using the cursor, arrows, tab, backspace, and delete keys as they move the cursor, remove text, and create large spaces.
3-5 students practiced
Software Fundamentals: Using Program Menus and Toolbars
The learners receive direct instruction and practice with toolbars and program menus as they use the help tool to understand how to perform a task in a program, use the toolbar for common tasks, open programs and create, print, and save documents in this engaging and interactive digital lesson.
PE
Good week, this week we are practicing our basketball dribbling skills, so please make sure your scholar has proper athletic shoes, and water as the weather is getting warmer.

This week, students will make adjustments and modifications to last week's creations to improve their designs.

Greetings!
Kinder scholars are learning about insects!
1st grade scholars are exploring ways to save different habitats.
2nd grade scholars are working creating transportation or tools that mimic a plant or an animal.
3rd grade scholars are continuing their journey learning about coding. This week they are learning about debugging.
4th grade scholars are continuing to work collaboratively to create and deliver a message using only light.
5th grade scholars have begun their unit on Potential and Kinetic Energy where at the end of the unit they will build and test their roller coaster and create a commercial about the coaster that they create with their team.
