Dear Families:
We enjoyed welcoming our 4th graders to Skokie for Shadow Day on Friday. The day began with our 4th grade students visiting 5th grade and Exploratory classrooms, and ended with a fun performance by Griffin’s Tale, a Children’s Theater Company from Northwestern University. All 4th graders left with a copy of The Canyon’s Edge by Dusti Bowling. 5th graders will also receive a copy of this text before they head out for the summer.
Building a summer reading routine is a unique but important process as we support and grow strong reading habits for our readers. Thank you for partnering with us this summer!
Clothing Drive:
Below, please find a note from one of our 8th grade students from Washburne. Boxes will set set up at Skokie to receive donations.
Are your closets overflowing with outgrown clothes? Donating those clothes can change the life for a homeless child. Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive—at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities. You can help children by donating high quality, new or gently used summer clothes and shoes for children from birth to 12 years old. You can also donate extra school supplies for the fall. Your donations can go a long way for a child living in poverty.May 28, 2024
Monthly Observance: Jewish American Heritage; May 15-June
Jewish American Heritage Month originated in 1980 when Congress passed a resolution, which authorized and requested the President to designate Jewish American week. Since 2007, Presidents have been celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month for which to celebrate Jewish Americans and encourage all Americans to learn more about Jewish heritage and contributions to the United States.
On Friday, May 31st, we will be welcoming Maxwell Street Klezmer Band for a performance connecting to our monthly observance. We are looking forward to this opportunity to come together for an afternoon filled with music and celebration.
Field Day
Our Field Day is coming up soon! This memorable tradition takes place outdoors for most of the day. We want everyone to have a great time! If your child needs to leave early for an appointment, please remember we will be on the playfield next to Nielsen Tennis Center for much of the day. Extra pick up time may be needed!
We ask to have your child use sunscreen before they come to school that day. Also, please be sure they take any usual medication for seasonal allergies or asthma that morning. Staying hydrated is important too! Water bottles should have a name on them, to avoid them getting confused, left behind, or forgotten. Thank you for your support of this fun event! We are looking forward to a great day!
Spring 2024 Safety Bulletin
As we prepare for the summer season in the Winnetka community, I am sharing the District’s Safety Bulletin (3rd edition). This document is intended to share safety guidance and news with you in an at-a-glance format. You’ll find general information on a variety of safety-related topics from the District, Village and Winnetka Police and Fire Departments, such as water safety, information on pre-registering your ID for upcoming school events, and mental health resources.
“Winnetka Voices”
Season 2, Episode #6: Crow Island School at 85
Crow Island School, an internationally recognized beacon of Progressive Education, turns 85-years-old in 2025. Dr. Kelly Tess, Superintendent, reflects on the school’s enduring legacy with Dr. Luke Livingston, current Principal, and Dr. Julie Pfeffer, who served as Principal for 11 years. Listeners will also receive a review of extensive renovations that will occur in 2024-2025, retaining the building’s original historic details but, as Dr. Pfeffer notes, “allowing Crow Island to grow into the future so students and teachers can be their best.”
