Climate Zones & Landforms

Landforms
Gulf:
2 main characteristics
part sea and Ocean
reaches into land.
Gorgeous view
Very polluted
there are no Gulfs in Divergent.
Bay
Body is made partly of salt water
reaches into the land.
Gorgeous to look at
Gets easily polluted
Again no Bays in Divergent
Canal
man made waterway
can go uphill with the use of locks
extremely hard and long to build
No canals in my book

Canyon
A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides.
very steep
in the dauntless compound, there is a river, and on each side of the river there is a very steep drop off.
People suffering in the dauntless compound sometimes commit suicide and throw themselves over it
http://harcourtschool.com/glossary/horizons/canyon/facts.html
Mountain
an elevated point on land, the highest point.
provides elevation for water to flow down into the valley
transportation over mountains is extremely difficult
no mountains in divergent
http://harcourtschool.com/glossary/horizons/mountain/facts.html
Straight
A strait is the narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
easier for transportation
have to build bridges over it, provides land breaks
no straights in divergent
http://harcourtschool.com/glossary/horizons/strait/maps.html
Lake
a lake is a smaller body of water with land on all sides.
man made or natural
lakes provide a water resource for smaller communities and farms
lakes can take up valuable land space.
River
A river is a natural watercourse usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, a lake, a sea, or another river.
feeds valleys, and agricultural areas with much needed irrigation.
sometimes be difficult obstacles.
there was a river in the dauntless compound, you could fall in, or be thrown in. the river is very dangerous and poses a threat to the people who are near.
Cape
- A headland or promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea.
- Animals can wash up on it and die
- Provides a (dock) type thing for fishing
- None in divergent
Peninsula
- A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.
- Can be easily flooded and animals can wash up on it
- Creates a dock type thing for fishing.
- None in divergent
Tributary
- A dis-tributary, a river or stream that branches off from and flows away from the mainstream.
- In divergent they had a river going from dauntless out of the city.
- Can wash fish up shore
- Creates bigger bodies of water
Hill
- A naturally raised area of land, not as high or craggy as a mountain.
- You can look over things when on top
- You can't see over it
- None in divergent
- That I can think of
Volcano
- A mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth's crust.
- A big part of history
- It can kill living things when it erupts
- None in divergent
Plateau
- An area of relatively level high ground.
- Good for farming.
- Not a great sight.
- They lived on a plateau in divergent.
Archipelago
- A group of islands
Many people can live here, fresh water near
Can flood easily
- None in divergent
Cliff
A vertical, or near vertical, rock exposure.
Many animals and people die by falling off
Creates a great place for fun and (jumping off) beautiful views
- In the beginning during initiation they jumped off of the building that kind of resembles a cliff
Delta:
A landform that is formed at the mouth of a river, when the mainstream spits up.
Water resource good for farming.
May flood easily.
Their are none in my novel.
Isthmus:
A narrow strip of land that connects two landmasses.
It would be useful as a natural bridge.
Tresspassing.
None in my novel
Glacier:
A slow moving mass of ice.
Not useful, none in my novel.
Ships can run into (titanic).
Lagoon:
A stretch of salt water separated by a low sand bank.
Good for saltwater fish.
Harbor:
A place where vessels can dock.
Useful because it can protect ships and shelter them.
none in my novel.
Valley:
a depression between two hills or mountains.
Good for buildings/houses.
Flooding can occur.
none in my novel.
Oasis:
A fertile spot in a desert with water.
None in my novel, useful for survival in the desert.
Desert:
A dry, usually sandy stretch of land.
None in my novel, good for animals that live in a dry climate.
Climate Zones
Mediterranean
All mediterranean regions are located between 32° and 41° north or south of the equator.
Summers are warm to hot, and winters are cool but mild, with one month averaging
below 59° F (15° C); sub-freezing temperatures do not occur more than 3% of the total
time. Annual rainfall is relatively low, with at least 65% falling in the winter half of the year.
The only parts of the world where olive are grown.
Frequent fires occur due to low rainfall in the fall and summer.
divergent is more like a mediterranean climate than any other.
Highland
Highland climates are cool to cold, found in mountains and high plateaus.
Good sheep grazing areas
Often cold and windy
There are no Highland climate zones mentioned in Divergent.
Tundra
The Tundra climate is found along arctic coastal areas.
Provides a great environment to Arctic species.
The winter season is long and severe
Tundra climate is not mentioned in Divergent
Desert
low lying areas, hot and sandy.
Winds are light, which allows for the evaporation of moisture in the intense heat.
temperature range is 16 degrees celsius
The desert is very hot and severe.
this is a good places for animals and cakti to live.
no desert in divergent
Marine West Coast
A climate with warm summers and cool winters, a very narrow temperature range, Is probably the climate in my story.
Not particularly useful, can grow pants in summer.
Tropical savanna:
A wet and dry climate that is grassy with scattered trees.
Good rainfall(good agriculture)
Humid Subtropical:
Climate zone of subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild winters.
Good for agriculture.
Very Humid
Tropical Rain forest
The tropical rain forest is a forest of tall trees in a region of year-round warmth.
good source of timber etc. (lots of trees)
- flooding
Subarctic
long, usually very cold winters, and short, cool to mild summers.
too cold for farming
no heat waves to worry about
- http://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Subarctic_climate.html
Steppe
a large area of flat unforested grassland
boring
- good for herding etc.
Humid Continental
http://www.earthonlinemedia.com/ebooks/tpe_3e/climate_systems/humid_continental.html
A humid continental climate is a climatic region typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot summers and cold winters
this may be the climate zone in divergent
good for agriculture
- can have extreme weather conditions
