Happy Fall Ya'll!
Wow. Can you believe we are close to Thanksgiving and nearing the end of the first semester! So many cool things going on at this time. It is hard to keep. Let me try to recap...
October brought us our first TUSD Quarterly Benchmark assessment for students in grades 2 through 8. This is the first of three quarterly assessments that help us monitor students' academic growth. We also use the information to plan for upcoming lessons, so we are intentional in supporting students, specifically in the areas of reading and math. Miles students and teachers did great. I look forward to seeing growth at the end of Quarter 2!
October brought us the Walk-a-thon!! It was a fun day with many students running the track in costume. We laughed, we danced, we sang, and we ran! Thank you to the who volunteered, those who pledged, and those who joined the students on the track to keep them motivated. As always, it was a great event!
The holidays are approaching fast, and Miles will be active in spreading some holiday cheer. I am already so proud of the student council members for their vision to create baskets for families in need. I look forward to the end of semester concerts that students are preparing for. No doubt, they will bring joy to us all. There is also the sense of accomplishment for our outgoing 8th grade students as they wrap up their last first semester in middle school. That will bring smiles for sure:)
Check out the rest of the newsletter for so much more. I appreciate each of you.
Warmly,
Principal Andrea Steele
RUBY BRIDGES DAY THURSDAY!
Staff and students will gather on middle basketball court.
Students and staff that are not to be photographed will lead at the front of the walking line.
Middle school will lead through the gates first.
Feel free to show your Ruby love by wearing purple and/or making a sign!
Ruby helped paved the way for many of us to be here at school.
This is how we remember that struggle and show how unified we are today!

Counselor's Corner
October 23-31st was Red Ribbon Week, our annual drug prevention campaign. Thank you all for making Red Ribbon Week so special! A huge shout-out to Ms. Anna for leading the Ribbon Fence Tying activity for our elementary students—they did an amazing job! The students were very engaged during the counseling lessons, and I believe they gained valuable insights on how to build healthy coping skills and make positive choices for their mind and body.
I also want to thank everyone who has already submitted a poster promoting drug-free and healthy living. What a great job everyone did! You can view them in the cafeteria next time you visit.
Congratulations AGAIN to Adelle McNiece!!!
Garden News
Welcome, gardening interns! U of A students Fatimah, Tai, and Mackenzie work with Miles elementary students and assist with garden upkeep on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Middle school students participate by composting cafeteria scraps on Wednesdays.
Additional volunteers added irrigation to our vegetable beds and trimmed tree branches. A partnership between TUSD and U of A called School Garden Workshop makes all this help possible.
Parents ongoing help in the garden is essential and appreciated! Our school chickens get weekend and vacation care from a growing crew of volunteers. We overcame several health issues in the coop too, with extra time and new skills.
Students and volunteers alike are enjoying cooler days in the Miles garden. Recent highlights include our Fall Garden Cleaning work day of planting, trimming, and weeding; a creative “phenology faces” lesson; progress on garden painting and other artistic improvements; pomegranate tasting; reading to chickens in the courtyard; and tying red ribbons to the Broadway fence to symbolize healthy choices we make for our bodies.
Our next volunteer work day is Saturday, December 7th from 9:00-noon. Looking for other ways to be involved? Your support of Miles PTO supports purchases of garden materials throughout the year. Your tax credit donation to Miles keeps the gardening program staffed. And your conversations with student at home – about fruits and vegetables, family stories, and what they are learning at school – are a powerful way for kids big and little to feel connected to the garden. Keep up the positive work!
