A Message From Ms. Cannon
Happy Friday!
With the fall season upon us, our classrooms are filled with creative autumn projects and seasonal learning activities. Students are enjoying outdoor recess in the crisp air and discovering all the changes happening in nature. As we move into the cooler weather, we encourage you to write your child's name on the tag of the jacket so that if it gets misplaced, we will be able to quickly return it to the rightful owner.
Sincerely,
Kirsten Cannon, Principal

3rd Grade Testing
Our 3rd grade students will take the fall English Language Arts Ohio State Test this month. Students will test on Tuesday, October 22nd and Wednesday, October 23rd. Makeups will be completed on Thursday, October 24th and Friday, October 25th. All testing will begin in the morning after specials.
If you are a 3rd grade parent, we would LOVE for you to write a letter or card of encouragement to your child that they will read before starting the test. If possible, please put the letters in an envelope because we would like for them to be a sweet surprise for our students!
We have planned a (short) 3rd grade Pep Rally on Monday, October 21st for our students. The purpose of this pep rally is to build confidence and encouragement.
Teachers are also taking time to explain to students what trying their best looks like when taking a test. For example, we encourage students to take their time and check their work. We would appreciate if you would also talk to your student about the importance of doing their best on the test. Students who do their best on the test will be invited to a 3rd grade Movie Party on Friday, October 25th!
Lunch Accounts
As a reminder, you are able to add funds to your student's lunch account through the Talawanda EZ Pay system. If your student's account reaches -$50 it will be rolled into your school fees. Please be mindful and keep your student's account current. You can use Talawanda EZ Pay, send a check or cash to the school office to take care of your student's balance.
Submitting Dismissal Changes
To help ensure students arrive at their correct dismissal location, we kindly ask that you contact the main office by 2:30 PM if there are any changes to your child’s dismissal plan. While we understand that emergencies can happen, we’ve noticed a significant increase in last-minute changes around 3:00 PM, which can cause confusion and delays.
By notifying us by 2:30 PM, we can make sure your child receives a dismissal note and reaches the right spot after school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Transportation Updates
Beginning September 19, 2024, Bogan & TMS Bus #63 will be split between BUS #68 and Bus #72. This will last for a minimum of 2 weeks. Please note that there will be changes to the routes and morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off times.
Please see the temporary amended routes below.
Attendance
Student attendance is crucial to your student's success here at school.
The state of Ohio defines chronic absenteeism as a student being absent for 10% of the year for both unexcused AND excused. In addition, the state looks at hours that a student has missed school- not just days. This mean that tardies in the morning and early dismissals in the afternoon contribute to chronic absenteeism.
As mentioned last week, if your family has a fun trip planned, we absolutely encourage you to go and make those memories!! Please just be mindful of other days that your student is absent.
We will send monthly letters home if your child has reached 10% or more absences. This is a way for us to proactively share information with you about your child's attendance.
Please know that we are here to help!! Do not hesitate reach out if you have any questions or need assistance!
Counselor's Corner
Hello parents and guardians! It has been a busy beginning of the year here in the Counselor’s Office! We have class lessons up and running and it has been such a joy to get to know your students! Each class is receiving a social-emotional learning program called Second Step. In these lessons, your students are learning what it means to be a good listener, how to follow directions, how to identify and handle big emotions and feelings, and what it means to be a good friend. Most lessons build on the one from the previous week. This is what we have been learning in each grade level so far:
Kindergarten and 1st grade: We have learned how we use our whole bodies to pay attention! Our brains help us to think and make good choices, our eyes help us to see the grown-ups teaching us, our hands stay to our sides or in our laps, our legs are crossed or in front of us, and our mouths are used to say kind words to others. We have also learned that it’s okay to make mistakes and we keep practicing to learn new things.
2nd grade: We are learning to identify what we are good at! We’ve talked about how it is okay to make mistakes because we are still learning and that practice helps us to become better at the things we are learning. We have also talked about how it’s okay to ask for help when we make mistakes.
3rd grade: We are learning how our brains make networks that talk to each other to help us learn something new! Each skill we learn is guided by a different section of our brain that works together to help us learn.
4th and 5th grade: We are learning how to set goals towards things we want to be good at! We have determined that good goals are ones that are specific, challenging, and doable. We have worked to set individual and class goals to work towards this school year.
Counselor note:
Please do not hesitate to reach out in any way if you think your child needs additional support or check-ins to help them be successful, both in the classroom and at home. I am here to help in any way that I can!
