Fall Sports Roundup
MEDFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
Middle School Girls Softball Undefeated GBL Champs!
The Middle School Softball team had an excellent season. The team was led by tremendous pitching that held the opponents to less than 2 runs a game with 3 shutouts - including a No-Hit Championship Game! In addition, the defense was lights out with some outstanding double plays and highlight fielding gems. The offense, which scored an average of 11 runs per game, found production from throughout the batting order. The team did not rely strictly on their bats for scoring though, as their speed proved too much for their opponents. The Mustangs were deserved GBL Champions!
Middle School Boys Baseball
Middle School Cross Country
Both the Boys and Girls Middle School Cross Country teams had undefeated seasons! Medaling at GBL’s for the boys were Lucas Graham and Shay McFeely, finishing first and third respectively. Girls runner Parker Preisner took home second place, who earlier in the year set a Medford course record!.Others who set notable personal records in their final season were Lucas Graham, Shay McFeely, Jack Allen, Parker Presiner, Lucy Felix, Leah Hershkowitz, and Adeejah Wilson. The Cross Country teams will miss their graduating eighth graders tremendously, and they look forward to another great season with their returning runners!

Crew
Cheer
This season the Medford Cheerleading team reached exciting new heights, growing both in numbers and in skill. Each athlete brought dedication, energy, and a drive to push their abilities further. This growth not only strengthened the teams’ dynamics, but it also created a spirit that shines at every game and performance. The team has shown incredible perseverance and passion, setting the stage for a future full of achievements and unforgettable memories.
The Cheerleading team also noted that they also couldn’t be prouder of the football team for the records they have broken this season and that they’ve enjoyed the privilege of cheering them on at every game!
Cross Country
The Girls Cross Country teams went 6-1 in the Greater Boston League this season and took 2nd place at the GBL Championship Meet. Junior Emma Beardsley won the league meet by 70 seconds (16:38 for 2.6 miles), breaking her own course record by 27 seconds! Freshman Isabelle De Sousa-Vieira took second place at the league meet and became a GBL All Star.
Meanwhile, the Boys Cross Country team went 6-1 during the regular season and took 2nd place at the GBL Championship Meet. Junior Adam Lewis won the GBL meet, running 2.6 miles in 14:33. Athletes on both teams showed significant improvement in their times throughout the season.

ESPORTS
ESports, Medford High School’s newest sports team, is here to bring fun and friendly gaming competition to the school! ESports recently wrapped up a spectacular Fall 2024 season, as two of their three teams advanced to playoffs. Mario Kart, captained by Virginia (Echo) Valdez-Melgar, finished with a 5-3 record; Splatoon, captained by Sarah Quintanilla, ended with a 6-2 record; and Smash Bros, captained by Lawrence Gilmore, concluded with a respectable 4-4 result. ESports plans to add more teams in the future, and is gearing up for another fantastic season in the spring!
Football
Medford Football stumbled out of the gate, but erupted into a five-game winning streak to finish 5-3 at the end of their regular season. The Mustang’s undefeated October included a couple of lopsided victories and some dramatic finishes against GBL opponents. A last-second field goal won the game against Revere in the rain, and the Mustangs overcame a 12-point second half deficit to defeat Lynn English. The Mustangs won on Thanksgiving 34-14 to win the GBL Championship!
Quarterback and Linebacker Justin Marino is on pace to shatter dozens of individual records on both sides of the ball, receiving state-wide recognition for his high level of play. Even with his performance, the success has started up front; Junior Captain Nathan Brou and Senior Connor Cardoza started on both lines, while Senior Captain Josh Santos contributed on the defensive line and led the way at fullback. Senior Captain Prince Exavier, Junior Captain Gui Martins and Senior Darius Weekes proved to be threats with the ball in their hands on offense and developed into major disruptors on defense. Two other Juniors, Sam Dieurestil and Demi Georges, proved to be a dependable presence on defense and special teams.
All Stars: Nathan Brou, Samuel Dieurestil, Prince Exavier, Demi Georges, Guilherme Martins & Darius Weekes. - MVP Justin Marino
Golf
The Mustang Golf Team finished in first place in the GBL with 8-1-1 record, earning them a trip to play in the MIAA D 2 North State Tournament at The Brookline Country Club. The Mustangs had lots of experience this season with seven returning starters and two-time GBL All Star Anthony Madarese and GBL MVP Emet Chasteen. The Mustangs carried a large roster with 13 golfers, all of whom played in at least two matches and had a major impact on the success of the team. With 10 of the 13 golfers returning for another season, the Mustang Golf Team is excited to build on their success next season. The team encourages all new golfers to try out next year and take advantage of the Youth on Course summer program at The Unicorn Golf Course.
All Stars: Carter Charron & Anthony Madarese- MVP Emet Chasteen
Boys Soccer
The Mustang Boys Soccer team finished the season 5-9-3, finishing just short of making the state tournament. The highlight of their season was a five-game win streak over rivals Revere, Beverly and Somerville. Arthur Braganca made the GBL All-Star team, and was named as an Eastern Mass All Star and was an All-American nominee.
All Stars : Arthur Braganca & Michael Pach
Girls Soccer
The Girls Soccer team concluded a very successful fall season with a 12-4-2 regular season record. They finished in 3rd place in the GBL and earned a berth to the postseason.
The Mustangs were skilled, balanced and deep with ball handling at all positions. Senior Goalkeeper Kaileigh Dixon recorded eight shutouts during the season. Cecilia Colombo and Jossira Kouyate were nominated as GBL All Stars. Additionally, Jossira was selected as the GBL MVP, an EMGSCA First-Team All Star and was named the Team MVP. Cecilia was also selected to the EMGSCA Second-Team roster. Finally, Catrine Elien was awarded the United Soccer Coaches Association Senior Excellence Award for 2024.
All Stars: Cecilia Colombo - MVP - Jossira Kouyate
Girls Volleyball
As a whole, this season was an incredible building year for the Medford High School Girls Volleyball program. The Varsity team’s tagline this year was "Medford High School - the team that never gives up.” This year's team could not have done a better job living up to that tagline. The program demonstrated terrific commitment, hustle, and positivity, and they already look forward to building on that momentum next season.
All Star: Ella Melchionno
Unified Basketball
Unified Basketball finished the fall 3-3, with wins over Malden, Lynn Classical and Lynn English. The Unified Mustangs visited the Salemwood School in Malden on November 12th for an All-League Jamboree, and followed that by participating in the 3rd Annual Unified Flag Football game at Hormel Stadium on November 21st. The team also reached record-high participation this season, with 22 participants in the program.
