Straight from the Hardt
Hello Ridgeline Families-- Thankful for a better week of weather for our spring sports teams and our PowderPuff Football game!
But, let me rewind a bit to last Friday and our epic staff vs students Unified basketball game. The game itself was a real battle, back and forth for a while until the Unified team started to pull away. Our student athletes working together and competing with our amazing staff was a fantastic experience. What pulled it all together was participation from our other spring sports athletes who paused practice and showed up to cheer on the basketball players. It’s hard to put words to the reaction from our Unified athletes when the crowd erupts when they make a great play. No staff members were injured in the filming of this game, and thank you to Coach Rasmussen for urging us all on to put this game together!
Earlier that day we marveled at the incredible work of our grade level teams who decorated their themed hallways to officially kick off Verde Loco. All the classes had thoughtful themes and connected their themes to decorations that inspired and impressed! We learned on Monday that the top two grade levels, Seniors and Sophomores, were very close, but the Sophomores edged them out for the win. Maybe it was the fresh popcorn at the Greatest Showman ticket booth or the attention to detail for the decorating criteria, so they won the Verde Loco points!
Skip forward to Monday, and the official Kick-off assembly where we were wildly entertained by our performing arts teams as well as dance and cheer. The coolest thing about these experiences is the showcase of student talent in so many different ways. When you pause and reflect on the hard work of the indoor percussion, winter color guard, pep band, cheer, and dance (who qualified for state!!), it truly inspired me personally. I am always so impressed at their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their team and to our school to do those things that truly set us apart and exemplify what excellence looks like! Our leadership team has created a Hunger Games theme for the month, and all the games and activities have that vibe. Our next big event is the final showdown on March 27 with the Battle of the Green final class competition!
So much going on, and Tuesday we enjoyed the 2nd annual Powderpuff football game. Girls on the field, and the guys leading the cheer squad! Check out Instagram for our boys cheer highlights—they’re pretty good! It’s a classic event that everyone truly enjoys and has so much fun with. We have some tough female footballers. In a one-hand touch game there was no shortage of athleticism and competitive juices flowing! It’s actually two games on the night. The Sophomores and Freshman were game 1. The freshman came out firing early and held on for a clean victory to hoist the trophy! The junior-senior game was a bit more intense. The teams battled hard with the regular timed game ending in a tie. After a brief review of the “official” overtime rules we played a series of overtime events. Finally, in the third overtime, the rules were sudden death with a single play to decide the winner. After the coin toss the juniors ended up on defense and the seniors on offense. One play from the 5 yard line. A stop, and the juniors win. A score and the seniors win. The senior football players drew up the game winning play with an amazing touchdown pass from Kate Atwood to KJ Haneke! The seniors happily celebrated in the end zone with team rowing exhibition!
So…within all of this we have an active Food Drive and Shop Loco events going on! Any contributions to these causes is greatly appreciated.
I’ll be on the panel of judges for our 3rd annual Poetry Slam contest (pictured here), where talented writers and orators produce original works and compete through a live performance. It’s quite impressive!
Please take a look at today’s Flyer to see what else is happening with our amazing Ridgeline students!
Make it a great weekend! --Mr. Hardt

Congrats to our Junior State of America Club
Congratulations to Ridgeline's Junior State of America club and advisor Mrs. Bergman for receiving a $1,000 grant from the Washington State Civic Learning Council. This money will go toward attendance at a Pacific Northwest JSA event next school year. Washington's Civic Learning Council specifically addresses gaps in civic learning and how our state can be more effective in providing meaningful civic learning for all our Washington youth. JSA is an active national community of students who are participating in our democracy and learning to lead through unique programs.
AP Environmental Science
AP Environmental Science classes spent the day on Mt. Spokane learning about snow science. After snowshoeing up the mountain, students dug snow pits and collected data to calculate snow water equivalency (SWE). Classes will analyze their data and compare it to the national SNOTEL site to help predict aquifer recharge and fire danger for the next year.
We want to thank Kat Hall and The Lands Council for sponsoring and providing such valuable education.
If you're interested in real world, hands-on science, it's not too late to sign up for AP Environmental Science. See Ms. Larsen in C109 or see your counselor.
