Eligible Class of 2023 Students Awarded Oregon Promise

March 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023 Graduates

Oregon Promise awarding has begun for Class of 2023 applicants. There is no Expected Family Contribution (EFC) limit for new applicants (Class of 2023) -- this means all eligible applicants will be considered for an award in 2023-24 if they meet all requirements and apply by their deadline, regardless of income. Most students must apply by JUNE 1.

SBHS Evening of Excellence-May 30th 7:00pm-Auditorium

What is the purpose and history of the Evening of Excellence?

This event was created to recognize senior scholarship winners from local donors. We also recognize students in Leadership, Scholars of Distinction, CTE Completers, athletic signings and performance plans for college.

Who should attend?

Anyone is invited to attend but scholarship winners and recognized groups will receive a mailed invitation to attend. Parents and families are encouraged to attend as well.

DEADLINE to report scholarships in order for this information to be included in the senior graduation program is: Monday, May 22nd.

Have you seen our Local Scholarship list? These are mostly donations from our local service organizations and more. Stop by the C&CC to learn about each individual scholarship's requirements.

Don't forget to report any scholarships you have been awarded, seniors! You have until May 22nd to do so.

Current Juniors will face a brand new FAFSA process. Most years, the FAFSA opens on October 1. Next year's will be available to the class of 2024 in December 2023. Read more here about how the FAFSA will differ and be prepared. Remember, the 2024-2025 FAFSA (the one next year's seniors will submit) will need tax documents from 2022.

Visiting schools is always a great plan. Students learn a great deal from seeing a school in person. Remember, determining what you like about a school is as important as learning what you do not want in a college. Sometimes a virtual tour can be a very beneficial experience, too. Watch for fun events celebrating our seniors and the decisions they will be making regarding their futures. Join in the excitement outside the College & Career Center on Monday, May 1. Come tell us the good news and what you will do with your life after Barlow.

Summer Camp Opportunities are filling up the bulletin board near the College and Career Center. Come check out a way to explore your interests this summer.

This hands-on, trades-related Fair highlighting lucrative, debt-free career options in the skilled construction trades. Most workshops are managed by tradeswomen, illustrating the power and potential of a truly diverse workforce.

While the event is focused on presenting these career options to female-identified job seekers, everyone is welcome to attend.

Many local businesses are signed up to be at the GBSD Hiring Fair on Tuesday, May 23rd. Students can register to ride the shuttle bus from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm to attend the Hiring Fair by clicking this link. Come prepared to interview and bring a dozen resumes.

Come join the action-packed Career Day at Portland Fire & Rescue! Learn what it takes to work at Oregon’s largest fire and emergency services provider. Get a chance to suit up and try Portland Fire & Rescue's fun physical agility Join us on Friday, May 26th from 8:30 to 12:00. Transportation is provided. Limited seats sign up ASAP!

Juniors, watch for a celebration just for you! We are encouraging juniors to start making a list of schools you are interested in. SBHS is working to create collaborative efforts to support all students in navigating plans for life after high school. College Match Day is to communicate the importance of building a list of options that are a match for a student's interests and learning goals. Here are some Summer Break ideas for you to complete:

• Finalize a College LIst

We are putting together our Class of 2023 Commencement program. In it, scholarships that students plan to accept will be listed. Seniors should complete their Senior Feedback form here, so we can get accurate details in the program. This form opens on May 1. The deadline to provide this information is May 22.

SENIOR FEEDBACK FORM

Calling all seniors who wish to register for MHCC Fall 2023 classes here at in the College & Career Center. To meet with a MHCC advisor, you must sign up for an appointment on May 11th or 12th from 9:00 to 2:30. Be sure to apply to MHCC first, then give us your name and MHCC ID number so we can prepare for your appointment.Stop by the C&CC to register for a time slot.

Remember that the Oregon Promise will pay for part of your tuition if you have a 2.0 GPA. It's a win-win for you! That deadline is June 1st or you walk away from $4,000 to $8,000 of state-paid tuition grant funds.

PCC will be here on Tuesday, May 9th to talk to students who won the Future Connect Program positions and to students interested in the Next Steps to attend PCC. Come to the College & Career Center to be a part of this at 8:30 am. You will be excused from class.

We have full-time work for seniors and summer work opportunities for students 16 years old and up. The bulletin board next to the College and Career Center has new additions almost every day. Too many to post here!

Student Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL) University of Oregon Pre-College Programs
SAIL is a FREE week-long summer program hosted on UO campus where students get to experience college firsthand through exciting, hands-on, and interactive activities taught by distinguished UO Faculty. We offer in-person Day Only programs as well as Day + Residential Programs where selected students will get to stay in a UO Resident Hall!
